Position Description
We are seeking an experienced, creative Publishing Lead Volunteer to join our organization. This role will be responsible for developing engaging content for articles, blogs, and the Aeon for Ocean newsletter. The individual in this position will also provide leadership to the Publishing Team by assisting Associates with brainstorming, editing, and developing content.

- Edit one to two research-based articles per month for a K-12 audience and correct any errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and/or syntax
- Help brainstorm ideas and content for the monthly newsletter
- Assist Associates in the design/development of Aeon for Ocean’s monthly newsletter
- Approve all articles and design topics
- Researching reliable sources, fact-checking content, evaluating sources for quality and credibility, and verifying facts, statistics, and quotes for inconsistencies
- Provide helpful critiques, notes, and feedback for Associates’ work
- Communicate regularly with Associates and work closely with management to make discerning editorial decisions and important particulars regarding publication
Along with their passion for our mission, the successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelor Degree, preferably in Communications, Journalism, or English or equivalent experience
- Strong knowledge of English language, spelling, grammar, and style
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and details simultaneously
- Must demonstrate effective oral communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with staff inside and outside of the department
- Requires self-direction, tact, diplomacy, and a clear, courteous, and professional manner when dealing with the public
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team
- Previous editing or publishing experience is preferred
- Prior experience with a non-profit organization is preferred
- Location within the 48 contiguous United States is highly preferred
