About The Role

Salsa is seeking a Head of Payroll Onboarding to lead, optimize, and scale the payroll onboarding experience for our customers. This is a mission-critical role ensuring that new employers transition smoothly into payroll, setting them up for long-term success. You will own the end-to-end process of onboarding new customers, overseeing our teams who:

  • Assist employers with payroll account setup
  • Assess risk and financial compliance
  • Migrate payroll data
  • Ensuring customers are confident and ready to run their first payroll.

Your job is to manage these teams so that they work together to increase onboarding speed and efficiency while eliminating the friction and frustration that typically comes with setting up payroll.

This is a strategic leadership role requiring deep payroll expertise, process optimization skills, and exceptional team management abilities. You will design scalable, tailored onboarding processes that work for a diverse customer base—from small businesses needing hands-on guidance to large enterprises with complex payroll migrations.

Collaboration with internal teams (Product, Engineering, Customer Success, Tax Ops) and external partners will be key to success.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Define and execute the vision for Salsa’s onboarding function, aligning it with company goals and customer success outcomes.
  • Build, manage, and lead a high-performing onboarding and implementation team, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and execution.
  • Establish and track KPIs and SLAs to measure the success and efficiency of the onboarding process.
  • Cultivate a customer-focused, data-driven approach, continuously improving processes based on insights.
  • Represent the onboarding function in strategic leadership discussions by bringing data-driven insights, learnings, and recommendations.

Customer Experience & Success

  • Ensure a seamless and delightful onboarding experience, minimizing friction and reducing time-to-activation.
  • Develop self-service resources, guides, and training materials to empower partners and end users.
  • Establish a feedback loop to gather insights from customers and continuously refine the onboarding process.

Conversion, Implementation & Operational Excellence

  • Design scalable processes to streamline data collection, payroll account setup, and payroll migration for new customers.
  • Develop workflows and implement tools to ensure consistency, efficiency, and quality during implementation.
  • Create tailored processes for different customer segments, from small businesses with simple needs to larger enterprises with complex requirements like audits and parallel payrolls.
  • Manage and coordinate with US and overseas teams to ensure seamless execution.
  • Reduce churn risk by optimizing the transition from onboarding to payroll success.

Collaboration & Problem Solving

  • Work closely with Product, Engineering, Customer Experience, and Tax Operations teams to ensure onboarding processes integrate seamlessly with Salsa’s infrastructure.
  • Serve as a key advocate for customer needs during the onboarding phase, ensuring feedback is incorporated into product and process improvements.
  • Proactively identify and resolve issues during onboarding, stepping in as needed to address complex challenges.

Requirements

Experience & Skills

  • 10+ years of experience in payroll, implementation, or customer onboarding leadership roles.
  • Proven track record of building and scaling onboarding or implementation teams and processes in high-growth environments.
  • Deep expertise in payroll and tax, including payroll migrations and data mapping.
  • Strong project management skills with experience implementing and tracking metrics to ensure success.
  • Familiarity with tools and technologies used for onboarding, data migration, and team collaboration.

Leadership & Communication

  • Strong people management, leadership, and coaching skills with the ability to inspire and manage diverse teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly and effectively.
