
Lead Recreation Assistant (Swim Instructor)
Duties and Responsibilities:
The following are duties you may be required to accomplish but it is not all inclusive:
- Serves as a lead lifeguard over three or more lifeguards and over Water Safety Instructors (WSI) in the performance of lifeguard and related swimming facility duties.
- Distributes and balances workload in accordance with established directives.
- Ensures safe pool environment and resource protection standards are in compliance with established procedures.
- Directs, instructs, and reviews staff work assignments providing specific tasks, procedures and techniques and provides on the job training.
- Ensures strict adherence and precise attention to detail (e.g., water chemistry tests, facility rules of behavior, etc). and work assignments are accomplished.
- Observes swimming area to ensure safety of patrons. Ensures the swimming area is open to patrons at scheduled times and only authorized persons are admitted to the area.
- Using a variety of techniques such as artificial respiration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid; rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and promptly renders first aid to injuries. When needed, calls for professional medical assistance.
- Warns swimmers of unsafe environmental or health conditions or hazards, and recommends closing swimming areas until safe conditions prevail.
- Reports issues of performance, progress, training needs, or disciplinary problems to supervisor.
- Collects admission fees, makes change, and completes appropriate forms. -
- May perform other related or incidental duties as assigned for the daily operation of the swimming area to include: cleaning of bath houses, wading pools, main pools, pool decks, etc.

- Must possess an approved current and valid nationally recognized certification in lifeguard, basic first aid, and CPR which covers lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills and procedures for adult, child and infant.
- Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical.
- Satisfactory completion of installation records checks, state and national criminal background checks may be required for positions that provide lifesaving duties for children

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.
Qualifying Experience:
Possesses physical ability to swim and rescue swimmers of all ages, including adults, and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants. Must possess an approved current and valid nationally recognized certification in lifeguard, basic first aid, and CPR which covers lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills and procedures for adult, child and infant. WSI certificate required. Working knowledge to satisfactorily and safely accomplish basic pool maintenance. Knowledge of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing and recurring tasks. Ability to effectively communicate orally.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.
FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
