- Perform firefighting duties and serve as a crew member protecting life and property.
- Prepare inspection reports of unsafe conditions and conducts follow-up inspections to assure satisfactory corrections.
- Drive firefighting equipment to and from the fire scene and position vehicles for maximum utilization.

- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- This position requires certification in cardio pulmonary resuscitation and first aid.

GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) using or maintaining firefighting equipment; 2) controlling or extinguishing fires; 3) assisting in rescue operations including administering basic first aid to injured victims; 4) eliminating potential fire hazards by identifying hazards and fixed protection systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
