COO Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic business plans, policies, and procedures to support the firm’s growth
  • Establish, monitor, and optimize KPIs across all departments to track and drive performance
  • Collaborate with partners and the CFO to oversee financial performance, projections, and profitability
  • Identify and resolve operational challenges by presenting actionable solutions
  • Manage, mentor, and inspire a team of 5+ direct reports and multiple 1099 contractors
  • Oversee HR functions, including recruiting, onboarding, performance reviews, and employee retention strategies
  • Foster a strong culture of accountability, empowerment, and collaboration among staff
  • Ensure compliance with legal and financial regulations, including overseeing audits and implementing improvements as necessary
  • Oversee vendor relationships
  • Manage and optimize firm-wide technology systems, including transitioning to better operational platforms
  • Work with external marketing vendors to enhance brand awareness and generate business growth opportunities
  • Analyze and present reports on operational and financial performance to partners and leadership
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards

COO Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience within mid-size law firms
  • Minimum of 2 years (within the last 5 years) of experience in a management role, leading teams, developing, and implementing procedures
  • Proven track record of scaling a firm’s revenue
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning, financial acumen, and operational management
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • MBA strongly preferred
  • Strong finance acumen and experience collaborating with CFOs on budgeting and revenue goals
  • Expertise in managing HR functions, creating KPIs, and driving staff performance
  • Advanced proficiency in operational systems and law firm technologies
  • Exceptional conflict resolution, leadership, and communication skills
  • Solution-oriented mindset with the ability to implement effective strategies
