
Network Administrator
Network Administrator 9 Months Denver, CO (REMOTE - May require travel) *Local candidates only* (Candidate must currently be a Colorado State resident) Travel: Some travel to remote work sites is required within 50-mile radius
Briefly summarize the purpose of this position:
- This position provides technical network communications support. The position possesses functional knowledge pertinent to network (LAN/WAN/Network) communications technologies and is a contributor to the development, testing, implementing, and maintaining of new equipment. Equipment may include but is not limited to routers, switches, wireless access points and controllers, and VoIP technologies. This position recommends and obtains approval for network and security design changes that affect all supported sites.
Primary Job Duties: Network Operations and Maintenance (55 % of time)
- Provide daily technical operations support and technical expertise for network Infrastructure (hardware and/or software) as it relates to data transport (wired or wireless) and information technology.
- Assist with the design, installation and configuration of network communications infrastructure, including routers, switches, wireless access points, and wireless LAN controllers.
- Respond to critical outages and end-user technical issues escalated through the enterprise service desk.
- May be required to travel to any agency or location within 50 miles of primary work location to provide services. Primary work location is 1575 Sherman Street Denver Colorado.
- Respond to ServiceHub tickets by providing first line response through troubleshooting and escalating the tickets as needed.
- Provide specific examples of regular, ongoing decisions made by this position related to this duty.
- Determine site requirements in order to set up site networking equipment.
- Diagnose the cause of technical issues and determine and implement the best course of action for repair or resolution.
- Make decisions related to network design/administration and implement them accordingly.
- Make decisions regarding prioritization of workload.
Project Engagement (10 % of time)
- Provide high-level technical design recommendations to project managers and stakeholders on matters related to projects having network infrastructure components.
- Order circuits, coordinate matters related to structured cabling, and install/configure network hardware and/or software as needed to support project efforts and deliverables.
- May be required to travel to any agency or location within 50 miles of primary work location to provide services. Primary work location is 1575 Sherman Street Denver Colorado.
- Will primarily work on projects that have been identified as small in size and resources.
- Determine network design based on project deliverables.
- Engage vendors or other OIT staff as needed to prioritize and schedule tasks relevant to technical implementations needed by projects.
- Order hardware, software, and/or vendor circuits as needed.
- There may be multiple priorities competing for this position s time.
- Engage the Network Services Manager and/or co-workers as needed to stay on task and find resolution in a timely manner.
Documentation and Monitoring (10 % of time)
- Maintain documentation related to critical network infrastructure design, configuration, and maintenance.
- Maintain records on maintenance contracts and circuit counts, configuration, and capacity.
- Design and configure automated monitoring and event notification systems as needed to maximize availability.
- Participate in incident response and after-action review activities after critical system outages.
- Update and close escalated service desk tickets in a timely manner.
- Decide what information is relevant to network documentation and how to best present it in a manner that is consistent with Enterprise and agency standards.
- Determine when and how to use existing monitoring utilities (i.e. SolarWinds) for troubleshooting or to maintain high network availability.
- Prioritize service ticket workload.
- There may be multiple priorities competing for this position s time.
- Engage the Network Services Manager and/or co-workers as needed to stay on task and find resolution in a timely manner.
Vendor Engagement (10 % of time)
- Engage vendors and outside consultants as needed to support agencies' network communications infrastructure. This includes but is not limited to contacting vendors for assistance with structured cabling, MAC (move/add/change) work, and remote assistance to locations throughout the state.
- Complete Circuit Order forms to order, upgrade, or cancel CSN and internet circuits
- Provide specific examples of regular, ongoing decisions made by this position related to this duty.
- Determine tasks needed by the vendor and suggest an order of execution, if necessary.
- Schedule meetings/walkthroughs to determine requirements.
- Request regular status updates on vendor progress.
- There may be multiple priorities competing for this position s time.
- Engage the Network Services Manager and/or co-workers as needed to stay on task and find resolution in a timely manner.
- Vendors may not perform as expected.
Inventory and Asset Management (15 % of time)
- Manage and maintain inventory records of network hardware and software assets, including version software for those devices that require upgrades periodically.
- Provide specific examples of regular, ongoing decisions made by this position related to this duty.
- Decide which devices to cover maintenance on.
- Decide what type of coverage is needed on certain equipment
- Be able to keep up with the turnover of network devices.
- Lack of refresh cycles.
- Not knowing what equipment exists and where.
- Knowing who in the agencies to work with to gather information.
Highly desirable qualifications and experience:
- Comptia Network+ to include strong understanding of TCP/IP protocol suite, network infrastructure components (routers, switches), network operations ( manage switching, VLANs, ACLs, Management access etc.), and troubleshooting methodologies using the OSI Model.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: Ability to effectively communicate technical information to users and colleagues, both verbally and in writing.
- Customer service orientation: Strong focus on providing courteous and efficient support to internal and external users.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills: Ability to identify and troubleshoot network issues efficiently and logically.
- Familiarity with network management tools and protocols like SNMP, CLI, and network monitoring platforms.
- Experience working in ServiceNow ticketing system
- Experience with Cisco Meraki network equipment configuring, installing, troubleshooting, and supporting switches, and MX appliances
- Python Scripting and automation in network administration
- Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Route / Switch
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
