  • Meet the qualification standards of the position.
  • Some physical exertions required in effecting a swimming rescue: Must be able to lift and carry 45lbs and over, much of the time is spent sitting, standing, or walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling and reaching is required.
  • Participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, and to administer basic first aid and CPR through the period of employment.
  • If positions is identified as having "regular contact with children" (i.e. youth swim lessons instructor) in accordance with public law, a criminal background check must be completed.
  • All certifications must remain current during the period of employment.
  • Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized (e.g., American Red Cross) lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures.
  • Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized ( e.g., American Red Cross) CPR certification which includes adult, child, and infant procedures.
  • Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized (e.g., American Red Cross) basic first aid certification.
  • May be required to work other normal duty hours such as evening, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Lifeguards on coastal beaches must also be specifically trained in surf rescue techniques. The training is also required for swimming and aquatic exercise instructors. (Air Force Instruction 34-101)

If you are selected for Lead Lifeguard/Lifeguard:

  • Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized (e.g., American Red Cross) Water Safety Instructor certification. (If applicable to the position).
  • May provide advice and guidance, such as orientation, lesson plans etc., to low grade lifeguards.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of lifesaving, first aid, and CPR as would be learned through an approved course leading to certification.
  2. Knowledge of a variety of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks
  3. Ability (demonstrated, current and physical) to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children and infants.
  4. Ability to orient lower graded employees, distribute/balance work assignments, and monitor work accomplishment.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively, orally.



PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).
