The Director of Safety is a strategic leader responsible for the development, implementation, and management of all EHS programs and initiatives across the organization. This position leads the organization’s efforts in fostering a proactive safety culture and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal EHS regulations. The Director of Safety is a strategic leader responsible for the development, implementation, and management of all EHS programs and initiatives across the organization. This position leads the organization’s efforts in fostering a proactive safety culture and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal EHS regulations. The Director will drive continuous improvement of safety programs, conduct audits, identify risks, and ensure that all employees are trained and equipped to perform their jobs safely while minimizing environmental impact and maintaining operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Strategy:
- Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of all EHS programs, policies, and procedures, ensuring alignment with company goals and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and implement a zero-accident safety culture through strategic initiatives that promote employee engagement, training, and accountability.
- Lead the EHS department, mentor team members, and develop talent within the organization.
- Compliance & Regulatory Oversight:
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local EHS regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and other applicable governing bodies.
- Oversee the development and submission of required regulatory reports, including OSHA 300/300A reporting, and ensure that all records are accurate and up-to-date.
- Stay abreast of emerging regulations and trends to ensure proactive compliance.
- Risk Management & Safety Audits:
- Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and workplace inspections to identify hazards, assess risks, and recommend corrective actions.
- Lead investigations into accidents and injuries, conduct root cause analysis, and ensure corrective and preventative measures are taken.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and mitigate safety risks associated with new projects, processes, and equipment.
- Training & Development:
- Oversee the design and delivery of EHS training programs to employees at all levels, including hazard communication, emergency response, PPE usage, and regulatory compliance.
- Develop and maintain a training matrix to ensure all employees receive appropriate EHS training based on job roles and responsibilities.
- Ensure ongoing education and training on safety protocols, environmental compliance, and best practices to maintain awareness and compliance across all teams.
- Employee Engagement & Communication:
- Foster a culture of safety through clear communication, recognition programs, and collaborative efforts with management and staff to improve safety practices.
- Communicate safety-related data, trends, and initiatives to senior leadership, and provide reports on EHS performance and progress toward goals.
- Lead the company's safety committee and employee safety incentive programs to ensure continued engagement and support.
- Workers’ Compensation & Incident Management:
- Oversee the workers' compensation process, including reporting, claims management, and return-to-work programs.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting of incidents, accidents, and near misses, while ensuring that all incidents are properly investigated and documented.
- Cross-Department Collaboration:
- Work closely with other departments, including HR, operations, and facility management, to integrate EHS strategies into daily operations and project planning.
- Provide EHS guidance during the introduction of new equipment, processes, or facilities to ensure compliance from the outset.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and certifications.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in EHS roles with at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity, preferably within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other relevant EHS regulations and standards.
- Proven experience in leading safety programs, conducting safety audits, and managing EHS compliance and risk management.
- Highly developed leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate cross-functional teams.
- Expertise in safety culture development and continuous improvement processes.
- Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present complex safety data to executive leadership.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify risks and design innovative solutions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and EHS-specific software.
- Ability to travel up to 50% of the time to different company sites as needed.
- Ability to conduct on-site inspections, audits, and training in various operational environments.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform tasks in outdoor environments as necessary.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or other similar certifications.
- Master's degree in a related field is a plus.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
