Lowell School, a progressive independent school of approximately 315 students in NW Washington, DC, seeks a full-time Seventh and Eighth Grade Science Teacher to teach geoscience, life, and physical science and support the progressive integration of STEAM and outdoor science education content and skills. The ideal candidate will design and deliver high-quality, relevant lessons that incorporate Next Generation Science Standards and Learning for Justice social justice standards through reading comprehension and writing activities, as well as perform the major responsibilities listed below.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in education or a related scientific field including chemistry, biology, physics, and geosciences
  • A minimum of 3 years teaching experience
  • Knowledge of the social, emotional, and academic needs of middle school-age students
  • Well-versed in best practices for delivering science, especially in project-based environments
  • A student-centered pedagogy and comfort with differentiating instruction
  • Experience with curriculum development and curriculum integration, varied assessment strategies, and constructivist teaching/learning approaches
  • Strong skills in teaching a design process of ideation, experimentation, analysis, and iteration
  • The ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and families
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong executive management, organizational, and scheduling skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with Introduction to Physical Science, Anatomy and Physiology, and Responsive Classroom curricula a plus

Major Responsibilities

  • Teach two sections each of 7th and 8th grade middle school science
  • Serve as an advisor for a group of middle school students.
  • Teach an elective and collaborate on a project-based learning course.
  • Participate in grade-level and department meetings.
  • All Middle School teachers chaperone an annual multi-day capstone trip.
  • Leads a nationally recognized Environmental Science Club for students.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Middle School.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift to 25 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to traverse school facilities and lead students to safety in an emergency.
  • Long periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
