The Department of Creative Writing at The University of Texas at El Paso invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor of Instruction, non-tenure track, beginning Fall 2025.

The department seeks a dedicated writer and educator who specializes in one primary genre?fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction?while demonstrating experience in a second genre. The successful candidate will teach a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses.

As an active member of the department, the candidate will mentor students, serve on committees, and participate in department-wide initiatives. Additionally, the candidate will assist the director of the Online MFA with student advising, making experience with online teaching and Blackboard an essential requirement.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Teaching a 3:4 course load across undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Designing and delivering courses in creative writing across multiple genres.
  • Mentoring students in academic and career planning.
  • Assisting with student advising for the Online MFA program.
  • Contributing to curriculum development, assessment, and departmental initiatives.
  • Engaging in service activities such as student recruitment, event planning, and university collaboration.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MFA in Creative Writing or PhD in Creative Writing or a related field.
  • At least one published book and a strong record of additional publications.
  • Experience teaching creative writing at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Ability to teach in multiple genres beyond the primary area of specialization.
  • Experience with online teaching and Blackboard.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience advising and mentoring graduate students.
  • Demonstrated curriculum development experience.
  • Familiarity with current digital and publishing trends in creative writing.
