Nurse Consultant for the Maternal Mortality Review Program

BACKGROUND:
Our client s Mortality Review Program received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct time-limited activities in support of Preventing Maternal Deaths- Supporting Maternal Mortality Review Committees cooperative agreement. The objectives of funding award are to: 1) support Maternal Mortality Review Committees to identify and characterize maternal deaths for identifying prevention opportunities; 2) identify pregnancy-associated deaths within one year of death; and (3) abstract and enter clinical and non-clinical data into a standard data system [Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA)]. These main project areas are expected to involve effort from April 1, 2025 - September 29, 2025.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

The goal of the nurse abstractor in a maternal mortality review is to comprehensively gather pertinent information to accurately capture the events of a woman s life leading up to and including her death. Abstraction includes categorizing, coding, transforming, interpreting, summarizing and calculating the data. As part of the Maternal Mortality Review Program team, the Nurse Consultant Abstractor will be responsible for:

1) Working with our client s MMR staff to abstract records that may include maternal and fetal death certificates, autopsies/medical examiner reports, police reports, prenatal care provider records, hospital records (outpatient and inpatient), postpartum records and other records as identified as necessary.

Specific tasks include:
a) Receive assigned cases from our client s Principal Investigator (PI), through access to a secure folder;
b) Receive copies of autopsies, medical examiner reports, police reports, death certificates, news articles, and other available records from the our client s PI;
c) Responsible for reviewing records at each hospital, clinic, providers office, and other types of facilities, and filling out appropriate abstraction forms via our client s provided laptop;
d) Abstracting relevant information from the above mentioned sources;
e) Summarizing and writing de-identified case narrative summaries, providing additional information on each case based on clinical documentation in the records;
f) Attending case review committee meetings, answer any questions that the committee may have regarding information contained in the summaries.

2) Working with our client s Maternal Mortality Program to develop mortality surveillance for maternal deaths. Specific tasks include:
a) Attend virtual CDC hosted Abstractor training and MMRIA database training;
b) Input abstracted information, medical record information, death certificate and autopsy information into the CDC-hosted MMRIA database;
c) Attend monthly MMRC meetings, which are held virtually on Thursday evenings;
d) Contribute to the Maternal Mortality Review Committee s discussion on medical and social factors that led to the eventual maternal death and offer recommendations to decrease such deaths in the future;
e) May participate in Monthly CDC virtual meetings if available.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse with formal training in Obstetrics/Gynecology and experience working with various Electronic Medical Records at hospitals and practices, the technical skills to interpret key information in a medical context, and use of databases is required. Interpersonal and diplomatic skills to acquire records from real people in the field, representing the MMRC and ensuring the protection and confidentiality of information gathered. Knowledge and understanding of healthcare delivery and the interaction of facilities and providers within the healthcare continuum is preferable.
