The Director of University and Special Events will provide tactical leadership for Wilberforce University’s annual and special events. In this role, the Director will work directly with Division leadership to manage annual campus events. The Director will establish a working committee and provide guidance and assistance for annual university programs such as Homecoming, Dawn Dance, Commencement, Baccalaureate, and all University Convocations (Opening Day, Founder’s Day, and Honor’s Day; exclusive of Board Meetings). The Director will manage additional events that may provide monetary, scholarship, and media opportunities for Wilberforce University.
Guided by the University’s mission, the Director of University and Special Events will work with university leadership in a cross-division model to plan and host high-quality, cost-effective events. Additionally, under the direction of the Chief of Staff and in concert with Vice Presidents and staff, the Director will manage the comprehensive events calendar and oversee all aspects of event planning and execution.

- Responsible for the strategic direction, management, and execution of university events
- Establish and maintain relationships with vendors.
- Develop and track all event budgets each fiscal year.
- Utilize appropriate and effective strategies for engaging University stakeholders to events.
- Remaining under budget with all costs.
- Manage events and address potential problems that may arise.
- Implement strategies to improve participation in attendance and giving when applicable.
- Work closely with internal and external collaborators, (Marketing/PR team, staff leads) to provide visually appealing and cost-effective events materials.
- Must be able to properly plan for potential scenarios that could impact the integrity of the events.
- Must have strong multitasking, problem-solving, time-management skills, and excellent attention to detail.
- Must be able to promote programming and provide timely and advance notifications of upcoming events.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Bachelor’s degree and five years of related experience in event management. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Mastery of technology for calendarization, implementation, and promotional items.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to take a project from concept to completion in a determined amount of time within a determined budget
- Collaborative skills and ability to work in a hybrid reporting structure for specialized events.
- Strong communication skills including verbal, interpersonal, and organizational. Must master soft skills.
- The ability to manage volunteers and staff counterparts.
