Job Description

The starting pay range for this position begins at $17.09/hour - $18.25 and is based on the level of qualifications and relevant experience above the minimum requirements. Reserve: a position working an average of 20 hours per week (anywhere between 40-999 hours per year)

This is a mid-level staff position with responsibilities for plant installation, care, and maintenance in Estate gardens and landscapes. The Gardener II will work as part of a crew assigned to a specific section/area; crews are charged with design, presentation, and execution of gardening plan within established parameters. In addition, staff will assist with special projects and events as required.

Note: The ideal candidate must have previous experience working with woody plant material and exotic invasive plant management.

Schedule can vary, but is generally 7:30am - 3:30pm Monday - Friday.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma. A two-year college degree and/or 2 years related on the job training. Industry acknowledged certifications and designations are preferred. B.S in Horticultural field preferred.
  • At least two (2) years of related horticultural experience. The ideal candidate will have had prior experience working in a public garden responsible for plant

care/maintenance. A combination of education and experience may be

considered.

  • Strong knowledge of annuals, perennials, herbaceous plants, and/or roses. Candidates should be able to identify plants and proactively trouble shoot on care.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as independently with little supervision.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing world class guest service (internal and external).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and be proactive; must be comfortable with and able to take initiative as appropriate.
  • Ability to become WPS certified within 10 days of hire.

8 Acquire a pesticide license within 1 year of hire.

  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time; must be able to kneel, stoop, bend,

reach below and overhead.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolding as needed.
  • Ability to safely operate small equipment and machinery (e.g. edgers, mowers, etc.).
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather with fluctuations in temperature

and conditions.

  • Ability to work safely with and around pesticides and other chemicals.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Performs gardening duties including but not limited to: installing and maintaining plants in greenhouses, gardens, interiors, and landscape settings with minimal

supervision.

  • Prepares soils and compost as needed for planting with minimal supervision.
  • Performs basic grounds maintenance duties including but not limited to: general

cleanup, trash removal, weeding, mowing, hauling and handling brush.

  • Complies with all safety procedures related to duties.
  • Assists guests in a positive, courteous manner.
  • Works in an efficient, productive manner.
  • Follows instructions, written or verbal
  • Applies pesticides or fertilizers with minimal supervision.
  • Works efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Follows daily routine without supervision.
  • Operates basic and specialized grounds equipment.
