Summary

The Education & Outreach Specialist is responsible for promoting and expanding student achievement in aerospace STEAM topics while assisting in student engagement and recruitment for Wings Aerospace Education (WAE) programs. This role involves engaging learners of all ages, but especially middle- and high-school students, through hands-on, project-based, aerospace-related instruction in a variety of classroom and workshop settings. The Education & Outreach Specialist supports Wings Over the Rockies educational mission by conducting outreach at local schools, community events, and both Wings locations. This position offers a unique opportunity to inspire students, grow educational programming, and expand aerospace learning opportunities through both instruction and outreach initiatives. The Education & Outreach Specialist is a member of the Education department working closely with the Education Program Manager, Education Program Coordinator, and other cross-departmental teams. This position reports to the Director of Education.

Organization

Founded in 1994 on the former Lowry Air Force Base in east Denver's historic Lowry Field neighborhood, Wings Over the Rockies is a non-profit community organization dedicated to unlocking dreams of flight through exhibits, local events, and educational programming. We are Colorado’s official Air & Space Museum having been recognized by CNN Travel as one of their 20 Best aviation museums in the world. Each year we welcome over 160,000 visitors representing all 50 states and dozens of countries internationally. Wings is committed to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. Exploration of Flight (EoF) is our flight-focused educational extension. This 15-acre campus is located at the Centennial Airport where we offer showcase events with a variety of aircraft, aviation immersion programs, pilot ground training, and flight experiences. EoF is home to our Blue Sky Gallery exhibit and interactive aviation center featuring an airworthy fleet of civilian and military aircraft.

Program Support & Delivery

  • Deliver engaging educational experiences in classrooms, summer camps, workshops, and museum settings to inspire student interest in aerospace careers
  • Instruct and mentor middle-and high-school students in aviation and space-related courses
  • Lead hands-on, project-based learning experiences in aerospace STEAM subjects for all ages

Outreach & Recruitment

  • Actively promote Wings’ educational programs to students, parents, and educators to drive participation enrollment
  • Build and maintain relationships with local schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders to increase program visibility and participation
  • Represent Wings at school visits, community events, and outreach programs
  • Assist in recruiting students for WAE programs
  • Manage program supplies, outreach materials, and logistics for events

Collaboration & Administration

  • Work closely with education team, museum staff, and volunteers to ensure high quality program execution
  • Maintain strong communication and align outreach efforts with organizational goals
  • Track participation, collect feedback, and assist in reporting program outcomes to measure impact and effectiveness

Working Conditions

This position requires frequent commuting to various off-site locations. The Air & Space Museum operates in an 80-year-old aircraft hangar. Exploration of Flight is located at a busy regional airport. Environmental conditions may vary.

Requirements

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21+) years of age or older
  • Minimum one (1+) year of prior teaching experience in formal or informal settings
  • Must have reliable access to personal transportation and a clean driving record (MVR)
  • Bachelor’s degree or Teacher Certification preferred but not required
  • Prior teaching experience, primarily middle- and high-school-aged students in project-based learning environments
  • Proficiency with technology, including computer applications, digital rendering, 3D printing, robotics, drones, flight simulators, and other STEM-related subjects highly preferred
  • Working knowledge of the air & space industry, current aerospace trends, and emerging technologies preferred
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal, time management, and multitasking abilities
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Self-motivated, energetic, and outcome-oriented problem solver with excellent organizational skills
  • Commitment to social inclusion, ensuring Wings Over the Rockies and its programs are accessible to a diverse audience
  • Able to squat/lift/carry objects and push/pull carts weighing up to 50 lbs.
