Position Overview

The Office of Development is seeking an accomplished motivated leader with professional experience in philanthropy to join our dynamic team as the Director of Philanthropy. This unique and influential position reports to the Senior VP of Development and plays a pivotal role in shaping the collective impact of Scouting America’s philanthropic endeavors while empowering team leaders in the Office of Development and other Scouting America fundraising initiatives.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to create and implement a strategic, robust communications resource ecosystem designed to support and enhance the fundraising culture and tactical efforts of our organizaton. Additionally, the Director of Philanthropy will curate and create a comprehensive suite of resources to equip and support team leaders in the successful planning, execution, and support of fundraising campaigns, fostering a culture of self-sufficiency and excellence in philanthropic endeavours.

Responsibilities

Focus on creating consistent and meaningful philanthropic communications, for Office of Development team leaders, enabling them to excel in their fundraising efforts and contribute to the overarching success of philanthropic initiatives at Scouting America.

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive, powerful, and consistent philanthropic communications strategy that aligns with Scouting America’s goals and mission.
  • Establishes and maintains a comprehensive resource hub, curating toolkits, templates, and guides to support team leaders in planning and executing successful fundraising campaigns.
  • Develops specialized toolkits for donor retention, acquisition, major gifts, digital fundraising, and planned giving, ensuring each toolkit meets the unique needs of diverse fundraising campaigns.
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to design and implement engagement initiatives that promote a donor-centric culture, emphasizing collaboration, communication, and shared best practices.
  • Integrates data analytics support into resources, empowering team leaders with insights for informed decision-making and the continuous enhancement of fundraising strategies.
  • Offers strategic guidance to team leaders on campaign planning, goal setting, and implementation, fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making and effective resource utilization.
  • Works collaboratively with marketing, fundraisers, donor services, Scouting America Alumni, NESA, and other relevant departments to ensure alignment and integration of resources with organizational goals and initiatives.
  • Stays informed about philanthropic trends, industry best practices, and emerging technologies to continuously enhance and update resources in response to evolving needs and opportunities.
  • Defines and coordinates communication strategies for events, conferences, and campaigns.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

A comprehensive knowledge of the dynamics of resource development, including the creation and curation of toolkits, playbooks, and training programs, is essential. This includes an awareness of emerging trends in philanthropy. Knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities within the nonprofit sector, particularly in the context of a large, multi-functional organization like the Scouting America, is crucial for effective resource provision and strategic guidance.
  • Skill in: Resource development and curation, showcasing an ability to create comprehensive toolkits, playbooks, and training programs tailored to diverse team needs. Strong communication skills are necessary for effectively advocating the importance of philanthropy, articulating strategic guidance, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. Education

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business Administration, or related field from an accredited college or university.

Qualifications

  • 15 years of communications, donation, and prospect management experience.
  • Must pass a criminal history background check.

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.

Preferred

  • Interest in philanthropy and the non-profit community.

Physical Requirements

  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms, and other printed materials and information.
  • Hearing acuity for verbal communication, conversations, face-to-face interactions, and/or responses via telephone and telephone systems.
  • Speaking ability for general communication and ability to clearly enunciate in conversations with others.

This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.
