What We Offer You

  • Competitive salary - up to $115,896 annual salary ($55.72/hr)
  • Holiday-in-lieu pay - 6.5% of base salary
  • POST certification pay - up to 5% depending on level of POST certificates
  • Uniform allowance - $700 annually
  • Vacation accrualcommensurate with your years of experience as a POST-certified dispatcher
  • Training differential - $75/day
  • Bilingual pay -$200/monthonce certified by the City
  • City contribution towards deferred compensation up to 2% of base salary
  • Up to $2624.90monthly City contribution toward medical and dental benefits (you pay only $268.64/month for Kaiser family coverage)

Duties and Responsibilities

Supervision Exercised and Received: This class has no supervisory responsibility. Receives general direction from assigned management and/or supervisory staff.

Essential Functions:The functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.

  • Answers an emergency and non-emergency switchboard including hearing impaired line and related equipment;
  • Analyzes and evaluates complaint call information and determines dispatch priority and appropriate personnel and resources required;
  • Uses radio codes to dispatch and coordinate police personnel response units to incidents that originate with 911, non-emergency, and radio calls; transfers the information so that medical and fire response units are dispatched to incidents;
  • Maintains radio contact and monitors the status of field units and incidents at all times;
  • Enters information into the Computer Assisted Dispatch (CAD) and supportive systems, which processes information and associated data on incidents;

Qualifications

To qualify as a Public Safety Dispatcher, an applicant must:

  • Possess a high school diploma or a G.E.D.
  • Possess recent work experience involving public contact in which good judgment, tact, and effective written and verbal communication skills were clearly required.
  • Possess within one year of hire and maintain a valid POST Basic Dispatch certificate.
