A key member of the Education team, the Nature Access and Partnerships Coordinator

develops and manages educational partnerships that provide garden access to traditionally

underserved groups; supports building of meaningful relationships between Descanso and

outside nonprofits, community groups, schools, and other organizations; and helps the Gardens

and the Education Department meet the needs of the diverse audiences. Under the direction of

the Director of Education, this position identifies how partnerships can best support public

programs, school programs, and volunteer programs, and other institutional mission and

priorities, and works with staff across the institution to oversee and facilitate partner activities.

This position is highly visible working directly with partners, visitors, and volunteers of Descanso

Gardens in addition to working with internal and contracted team members.

Job Classification

This is a full-time (40-hour/week) non-exempt position and may include evening and/or weekend

hours, depending on the needs of the organization. At time of hire, the expected schedule

(subject to change and with some flexibility depending on the needs of the organization) is

Monday-Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00pm.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Oversees content development, logistics, facilitation and implementation of programs,

with a focus on supporting partnerships and Nature Discovery Garden, and coordinating

the Harvest Garden program.

  • Strengthens current strategic partnerships with community organizations, neighbouring

museums and like institutions, artists and thought leaders to support strong, sustainable

relationships within Los Angeles' diverse communities.

  • Helps cultivate and build new strategic partnerships to expand Descanso's reach,

particularly among traditionally under-served constituencies.

  • Supports partner programs, including summer camps, within the gardens
  • Develop, pilot, and facilitate new collaborative events, projects, and programs with

partners

  • Point person for partners for partner collaborative events
  • Coordinate partner tour visits to Descanso Gardens
  • Works with partners and internal staff to develop programming and other ideas for the

new Nature Discovery Garden

  • Plans and coordinates Harvest Garden program, including lesson planning, materials

requests, working with Nursery Manager to keep Harvest Garden clean and organized

as needed, volunteer and partner communications and outreach,

  • Interfaces with outside contractors and internal staff to ensure excellent visitor

experiences at programs.

  • Provides program staffing as required. Roles may include facilitating workshops and

programs, checking in program participants, answering visitor questions.

  • Coordinates, schedules, trains, and supports programs volunteers.
  • Participates in program evaluation, interpretive planning, and strategic planning for

Education Programs.

  • Responds to Education program inquiries by phone, email and other modes of

communication.

  • Maintains relevant records, including rosters of partners and volunteers, attendance and

demographic information.

  • Produces routine reports, manuals, correspondence; responds to inquiries or complaints

from members, the public, staff or vendors; processes routine requests for payments in a

timely manner.

  • Other duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED And PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Computer, phone, copier, printer, hand-held (two-way) radio, sound system, projectors,

golf cart.

  • Must be physically able to walk to various locations within the Gardens, which are not

accessible via motor vehicle, and must be able and willing to work outside in all weather

conditions.

  • This position occasionally requires lifting of up to 15 pounds.

Qualifications And Requirements

  • 2 years' experience in an education or community engagement related environment

required.

  • 1 year experience in a museum or non-profit setting is preferred.
  • Demonstrable, hands-on knowledge of best practices in community engagement and

sustainable community relationship building.

  • Broad-based knowledge of community programs development.
  • Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Highly developed organizational skills, ability to conceive and implement events from

inception to completion.

  • Ability to respond flexibly and well in a dynamic work environment.
  • Flexible schedule including weekends and/or occasional nights is required.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office, Gmail, Google calendar, and Zoom required.

Experience with Volgistics and Altru/Blackbaud is highly desirable but not required.

  • A valid CA Driver's License is required.
  • Bilingual (especially English/Spanish, Armenian, or Korean) preferred, but not required.
  • High degree of discretion and sense of appropriateness. Ability to manage contractor

files, including agreements and payment information, responsibly and respectfully.

  • Other critical attributes include a high degree of warmth, strong interpersonal

communication skills and a well developed sense of humour. It is essential that the
