Nightforce Optics is looking for an ELECTRO-OPTICS DESIGN ENGINEER. As part of the Nightforce R&D team you will have a critical role in the development process of new or existing products. This position provides an opportunity to work with an experienced, interdisciplinary team to create innovative solutions to meet unique and challenging requirements. This team takes design ideas and concepts from the drawing board, through analysis, testing, prototypes, and finally production of product. You will be responsible for the detailed design, development and testing of next generation electro-optic devices and accessories used for Mil-Spec and Commercial applications within the firearms and outdoor industry.

Nightforce Optics is looking for an ELECTRO-OPTICS DESIGN ENGINEER. As part of the Nightforce R&D team you will have a critical role in the development process of new or existing products. This position provides an opportunity to work with an experienced, interdisciplinary team to create innovative solutions to meet unique and challenging requirements. This team takes design ideas and concepts from the drawing board, through analysis, testing, prototypes, and finally production of product. You will be responsible for the detailed design, development and testing of next generation electro-optic devices and accessories used for Mil-Spec and Commercial applications within the firearms and outdoor industry.
Essential Duties
- Design mechanical components and assemblies using the fundamental skills learned. Works closely with design teams and the Product manager to design mechanical housings for integrating electronics and optical systems.
- Lead teams in electro-optics integration strategies.
- Design optical test fixtures.
- Prepares engineering calculations, drawings, and specifications.
- Create technical reports and documentation for design reviews.
- Coordinate and review engineering schedules with project team members.
- Collaborate with EE team to optimize PCB geometry and layout to satisfy mechanical limitations.
- Create BOM, cost model and assembly drawings.
- Work with CAD drafters to create detailed 2D drawings for manufacturing.
- Work closely with the manufacturing team to ensure DFM principles are used early in all design projects.
- Ensures design files and information are kept up to date and are under version control in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Demonstrate and promote teamwork and collaboration with team members at all organizational levels to solve problems and improve processes.
- Prioritize workload effectively and manage a project from start to finish.
- Interpret lens data from optical designers and generate lens manufacturing prints to ISO 10110-1 standards.
- Optimize modelling techniques utilizing the latest software advancements.
- Work directly with Engineering Tech to prototype and verify new designs.
- Assist and develop inspection processes for new products.
- Provide technical documents outlining assembly/operating procedures for new products to manufacturing engineers.
- Serves as technical correspondent to materials, ensuring blueprint details are successfully communicated to vendors.
- Ensure vendors comply with specs and are approved prior to manufacturing according to organizational guidelines.
- Work with Product Managers to ensure projects full fill market demand and sales potential.
- Communicate regularly and formally the project/task status to project teams and managers.
- Conduct research to test and analyze components' and systems' feasibility, design, operation, and performance.
- Additional Duties as Assigned.
- Product testing with live gun fire and in-field usage.
- Inspect parts using metrology equipment.
- Perform root cause analysis of defective parts.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering.
- 4-6 year of experience in engineering design.
- Sound literacy in 3D CAD & Microsoft office packages.
- High degree of mechanical aptitude and proficient math skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to use hand tools and work with small optical, mechanical, and electrical components.
- Ability to take direction, work independently, or in a team environment.
- High regard for confidentiality.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including keeping accurate records.
- Positive attitude and be highly motivated.
- Knowledge of the Shooting Sport/outdoor Industry
- Working knowledge of riflescopes.
- Knowledge of GD&T.
- Understanding of ISO 10110-1 standards.
- 5 plus years of experience in opto-mechanical engineering design.
- FEA and machine design experience.
- Knowledge of the outdoor industry.
- 5 plus years of electro-mechanical engineering experience.
- 5 plus years' experience designing mechanical housings, fixtures, etc. for holding and covering PCBs.
- Experience designing for manufacturing via machining, 3D printing and molding.
- Knowledge of optical component mounting, interfaces, and adhesive bonding.
- Experience with mechanical systems requiring precise alignment.
- Knowledge of injection molding small, complex parts including mold limitations and material selection.
- Experience with rapid prototyping using additive manufacturing, COTS components, dev kits.
- Industry experience interacting with EE team to optimize PCB geometry and layout to satisfy mechanical limitations.
- Experience sourcing domestic and overseas vendors for custom components.
- Experience with designing for IP-68 or MIL-STD 810-G.
- Experience working with optical prescription and imaging optics.
- Experience working with non-imaging illumination systems.
- Experience with micro displays including LCOS, OLED, uLED.
- Experience in AR/VR/MR industries.
- Knowledge of sensors including CMOS, CCD, microbolometer.
