Job Summary

  • The Staff Accountant is responsible for providing a variety of accounting services
  • This individual will apply principals of accounting to analyze financial information and prepare financial reports

Essential Functions

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Accounts payable and payroll knowledge
  • Basic word processing and advanced spreadsheet skills
  • Prepares monthly standard and adjusting general ledger journal entries. Identifies and prepares correcting adjustments or new standard journal entries with minimal supervision and in a timely manner
  • Provides support documentation that is self-explanatory, consistently clear and concise
  • Prepares general ledger entries in conjunction with monthly closing processes and reconciles general ledger accounts
  • Prepares month end stats
  • Completes timely account analysis and assists in special projects demonstrating strong ability to conduct the analysis and draw logical conclusions
  • Takes the initiative to resolve any errors or procedural problems identified during the analysis
  • Prepares the monthly financial statements and various other monthly financial reports. Completes financial statements prior to due dates allowing the Fiscal Services Manager adequate review time
  • Resolves errors and large variances prior to submission for managers’ review
  • Develops analytical/departmental reports as required or requested. Assists with the development and administration of the organization’s annual budget
  • Assists in year-end and other audits
  • Prepares audit work papers in a timely and accurate manner. Provides appropriate responses to audit questions and effectively organizes work papers minimizing the length of auditor’s time spent on the audit
  • Utilizes spreadsheet software to manipulate various computerized files to combine information and organize it for distribution to managers as part of the budgeting process
  • Complies and reviews budget spreadsheets for errors during this process to maintain the information in a manner consistent with the general ledger
  • Responds to inquiries and questions from department managers and other outside parties while rarely needing assistance in responding to the requests
  • Follows up on adjustments and corrections necessary as a result of such inquiries
  • Ensures departmental and organizational compliance with current accounting standards, hospital policies and applicable laws and regulations
  • Serves as an interdepartmental liaison. Works with internal and external auditors to prepare for and facilitate audits
  • Other duties as requested

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office, word-processing and spreadsheet software
  • Able to organize tasks, develop action plans, set priorities and function under stressful situations
  • Ability to maintain a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking, appropriate prioritization and time management skills

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting

  • Three years of computerized accounting experience in a healthcare environment, preferred
