The Process and Operations Section of the Materials and Process Engineering Department is looking for a Materials Engineer with specialty in Metallurgy and Heat treatment to join our team in Andover, MA. This role is to provide metallurgical support through the life cycle of the product, including program hardware design and development, specification and statement of work origination, production and reliability analysis support, failure analysis investigation, mechanical characterization and testing, and qualification of new materials, and material processes. A qualified candidate will have a background and experience in metallurgy and heat treatment and will perform material characterization and process development for product design and/or manufacturing. This position will offer a qualified candidate the opportunity to support material selections during design, development, and manufacturing of hardware, and to develop novel solutions and advancements in manufacturing, including advanced additive manufacturing, while supporting failure analysis activities associated with a wide range of product applications. The role will involve evaluation of a variety of materials, perform trade studies, special manufacturing assessments, and focus on metals, coatings, and the verification and validation that materials and processes used on product meet design and program requirements, while also interfacing with the various disciplines, supplier and partners, to support production needs. Collaboration with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, subject matter experts, and suppliers is required. A candidate must be able to manage and coordinate a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements.

What You Will Do
- Evaluation of materials and processes based on conformance to specifications and design and performance requirements
- Provide metallurgical support through the life cycle of the product.
- Supporting product production and supplier support activities
- Providing evaluation and resolution to technical, operational, and supplier problems related to materials and processes
- Participate in analysis and documentation of technical positions for alternate materials, obsolescence, and failure analysis
Qualifications You Must Have
- Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering or Metallurgy and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience. In absence of a degree, 12+ years of experience. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for additional years of experience
- Experience in metal alloy systems (i.e. Aluminum, Copper, Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel, Corrosion Resistant Steel, High Temperature Materials, and Specialty Alloys)
- Experience in metallurgical heat treatment and pyrometry including but not limited to SAE AMS2750, SAE AMS2759, and SAE AMS2770.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
- Experience reviewing engineering drawings and technical data packages (TDPs)
- Experience in working with metals in design and development (material selections) and/or evaluation of metals for use in products
- Experience working on programs, projects, or products associated with the Defense Industry
- Experience as a technical liaison between engineering, manufacturing, Integrated Product Team, quality and /or supply chain organizations
- Experience with metal manufacturing methods including Casting, Forging, Mill Products, Heat Treatment, Furnace Brazing, Additive Manufacturing
- Experience working with and evaluation of suppliers performing special manufacturing processes
- Experience with common industry standards for metals and metal manufacturing including Aerospace Materials Specifications, American Welding Society, and ASTM International.
- Experience with corrosion fundamentals and mitigation techniques
- Experience with mechanical and/or chemical analysis methods and characterization techniques
- Demonstrated ability to lead and complete scientific based projects including failure analysis and obsolescence investigations
