This position functions as a Transportation Worker IV in the Rockingham County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Position will also serve as lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. Position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. Position will take on responsibilities such as training lower-level employees and act as the back-up crew leader when the crew leader is out.

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and Practices.
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and to train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.

Additional Expectations

Safety toe footwear is required within 30 days of employment. Employee must be able to operate a medium dump truck safely. Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment, hand & power tools, & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor, and the ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Employee must have the ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain, lift 50 lbs., and must be able to work in extreme temperatures and adverse conditions.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completing of the on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. Â As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
