Work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owned bridges, culverts and pipes within Division 12. Â In addition to work performed at the prior level, this level may occasionally operate a backhoe, excavator, and truck crane. Â This position will report to the Newton County Bridge Maintenance Office. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. The recommended applicant will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, and with power tools. The recommended applicant must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. The recommended applicant could possibly be exposed to briars, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes when working around or under bridges. When traffic volumes dictate, the recommended applicant may be required to work at night or on weekends. When inclement weather occurs, the recommended applicant may be called upon to work nights and/or weekends to help in the snow and ice removal process.

Safety toe shoes required. Â Must safely be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Â A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License is required for this position to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver/s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Â Pre-employment drug testing will be required. Â As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Â This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. Â An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. Â In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. Â Â

- Experience in the operation of at least one of the following: Â air compressor, forklift, dump truck, vibrator roller compactor, front end loader, backhoe, tractor trailer, truck mounted crane, asphalt distributor, asphalt tanker, chip spreader, crawler tractor, motor grader, scraper, track loader.
- Knowledge of work zone safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures
