Under the close supervision of the Recreation Superintendent, performs public relations, supervisory and administrative duties in operating the City's Swim Lesson and Swim Team Programs. Supervision is exercised over swim instructors. May be required to work as a Pool Manager. Work requires flexible hours (mornings and evenings). Performs other work as required.

Examples of Duties

  • Develops, schedules and supervises the City's Swim Lesson Program.
  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of the swimming pools during the Swim Lesson program.
  • Prepares correspondence, keeps records and makes reports.
  • Ensures the safety of class participants.
  • Schedules use of aquatic facilities.
  • Selects, trains, supervises and evaluates swim lesson personnel.
  • Insures that safety regulations and standards are followed.
  • Enforce rules and regulations and department policy.
  • Receives citizen complaints and inquires and takes or recommends appropriate action.
  • Coaches swim team, including swim meets, practices, text to parents with cancelations and make up practices.
  • Completes chemical checks before and after swimming lessons.
  • Answer phones, handles money and record keeping for class registration.
  • Teaches swim lessons when needed.
  • Performs general housekeeping practices in the aquatic facility.
  • May perform duties of Pool Manager when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience; and
  • 6 weeks (1 season) experience as Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and have taught at all skill levels.

Licenses, Certifications Or Registrations

  • Must possess a American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certificate or obtain within one (1) month of employment and maintain throughout employment.
  • Must possess First Aid, CPR, and AED certification or obtain within one (1) month of employment and maintain throughout employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of current swimming techniques, CPR and First Aid.
  • Ability to develop and implement public swim lessons for the community.
  • Good knowledge of the techniques, materials and equipment used in the operations of a Swim Lesson Program.
  • Working knowledge of swimming pool operation and management.
  • Effectively interpret and implement Red Cross curriculum and guidelines for swim lessons.
  • Skilled in various aquatic activities.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate skill level for participants.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing pool chemistry and management.
  • Ability to responsibly oversee the use of the swimming pool for swim lessons.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve citizen complaints and inquiries.
  • Knowledge of public relations techniques ability to handle complaints and issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
  • Ability to train, supervise and evaluate aquatic personnel.

Physical And Mental Requirements

  • Ability to understand and communicate with children.
