
Physical Scientist (Forensics)
- Responsible for the management and examination of highly complex forensic analyses of friction ridges by utilizing a full range of scientific methodologies and forensic techniques in support of the CBP mission to protect the American people, safeguard our borders, and enhance the nation's economic prosperity.
- Initiates, performs, and oversees examinations of a wide-variety of materials using forensic science techniques involving advanced mathematics, chemistry, mechanics, physics, thermodynamics, weights and measures, friction ridge examinations, computer science, physical properties and sciences, and practices sufficient to perform a full range of duties involved in investigative analyses of evidence and/or crime scenes.
- Coordinates the development of programs, policies, and procedures to ensure laboratory procedures, forensic examinations, and evidence handling procedures are current and are within the scope of the relevant scientific communities.
- Designs and conducts innovative and advanced scientific research for the purpose of discovering new forensic techniques and validation methods and resolving complex forensic examination problems.

Qualifications
Degree: Physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Education equivalent to one of the majors listed above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
- Conducting analysis, comparison, and evaluation phases of friction ridge examination and serving as a consultant to leadership and other scientists and program specialists;
- Gathering, processing, and analyzing scientific and technical data and summarizing for strategic and operational decision-making;
- Planning, and organizing projects, programs, and initiatives, coordinating with staff and management, and;
- Communicating conclusions, alternatives, and recommendations on national policies, programs, and studies.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
