The Executive Accounting Manager will oversee accounting functions for the company, perform accounting functions not performed by other staff, improve the company's accounting operations, and make sure that all company accounting functions are performed in an accurate, timely, and effective manner. Experience and qualifications:

  • Five+ years of responsibility and experience overseeing general ledger accounting, preparing income statements and balance sheets, and managing monthly closes for a company or organization
  • College bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent formal accounting training
  • Deep knowledge of accrual accounting functioning and accounting terminology
  • Deep expertise in using accounting software, databases, spreadsheets, and common productivity software including spreadsheets
  • Detail-oriented and can organize and manage many different responsibilities
  • Aptitude for entering information in databases and creating reports from databases
  • Track record of performing responsibilities with accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and efficiency through paid and/or volunteer work
  • Track record of being accountable for meeting deadlines and completing responsibilities
  • Experience in book publishing is not required but would be beneficial

Requirements

Purpose

Oversee accounting functions for the company, perform accounting functions not performed by other staff, improve the company's accounting operations, and make sure that all company accounting functions are performed in an accurate, timely and effective manner.

Manage General Ledger Accounting

  • Ensure the integrity of data coming from subsystems, journal entries, and other sources
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, analyses, and comparisons for internal use and distribution outside of the company
  • Review and ensure quality control of company financial information
  • Ensure the accuracy and proper functioning of all company accounting areas, including accounts receivable, revenue recognition, collections, inventory accounting, royalties accounting, payroll accounting, accounts payable, and cash and spending controls


Manage Monthly Close Processes

  • Ensure that all financial entries are recorded accurately and in a timely manner
  • Coordinate with various company departments to meet monthly reporting deadlines
  • Implement improvements that streamline the close process and enhance accuracy
  • Perform or make sure that others perform each component of the monthly close process


Leadership and Supervision

  • Lead weekly accounting team meetings and participate in weekly fin/ops meetings
  • Supervise the accounts receivable and royalties accounting manager. Support the company's accounts payable contractor and the company's inventory manager
  • Lead the development of the capabilities and performance of company accounting staff


Revenue Entry Accounting and Cash Receipts Accounting

  • Perform or oversee others' performance of revenue entry and cash receipts entry into the company's accounting systems from all sources of revenue
  • Reconcile unapplied cash receipts, chargebacks, and accounting discrepancies from subsidiary right income, print and digital sales, and other income sources
  • Reconcile all cash accounts and bank accounts
  • Implement new systems and processes to improve revenue reporting and streamline monthly close timelines


Manage Tax Compliance

  • Make sure that the company is complying with local, state, and federal tax compliance, including sales taxes, property taxes, payroll taxes, income taxes, and 1099 forms
  • Provide information needed by the company's outside tax accountants and its payroll service provider for the various tax requirements


Financial Analyses

  • Prepare financial reports, analyses, and projections in relation to operating results and cash flow that are needed by the company's staff, management, and board of directors
  • Prepare financial statements to share with the company's bank and shareholders
  • Coordinate preparing and collecting the financial information needed for the annual audit or review of the company's financial statements by its outside accountants


Financial Systems

  • Oversee the organization and maintenance of company financial records stored online
  • Maintain the company's chart of accounts and other financial tools
  • Make sure that company shareholder, ESOP, payroll and benefits accounts are properly maintained
  • Improve and streamline company financial systems


Collaborate With Other Departments

  • Work with other departments to prepare company business plans, spending controls, etc
  • Participate in company projects, task forces, discussions, etc., as needed


General Company Citizenship

  • Participate in company staff meetings, other meetings, and activities as needed
  • Attend company publication boards, author book presentations, etc., as desired
