Job Title: FHIR Architect
Location: Remote
Employment Type: Contract

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled FHIR Architect to lead the design and implementation of HL7 FHIR-based healthcare interoperability solutions. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of healthcare data exchange, FHIR standards, and cloud architecture, and will play a key role in modernizing and streamlining data interoperability across BCBS systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of FHIR-based APIs and services.

Develop and enforce standards and best practices for FHIR resource modeling and integration.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams (data engineers, developers, product managers, and client stakeholders) to define requirements and design scalable solutions.

Provide architectural guidance on integrating FHIR solutions with legacy systems and third-party platforms.

Ensure compliance with healthcare regulatory standards such as HIPAA, CMS mandates, and ONC interoperability rules.

Define and manage the FHIR data model, terminology services, and mapping to existing clinical data formats (e.g., CDA, HL7 v2, CCD).

Perform architecture reviews and risk assessments to ensure high availability, scalability, and security.

Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in digital health and interoperability.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.

7+ years of experience in healthcare IT, with at least 3+ years focused on FHIR-based architectures.

Strong knowledge of HL7 FHIR standards (R4/Stu3), implementation guides, and related tools.

Hands-on experience with FHIR servers such as HAPI, Firely, Smile CDR, or Azure Health Data Services.

Proficiency in designing RESTful APIs and microservices architectures.

Familiarity with healthcare vocabularies and standards (LOINC, SNOMED CT, ICD, CPT).

Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform), especially with healthcare-specific offerings.

Knowledge of data security, consent management, and patient access APIs.

Preferred Skills:

Experience working with or for Blue Cross Blue Shield or other payers.

Familiarity with US Core, Da Vinci, and CARIN implementation guides.

Understanding of payer-provider data exchange and value-based care models.

Strong communication and documentation skills.

Certification in HL7 FHIR or cloud technologies (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect).
