  • Supervises the day-to-day operations of Coding and Data Quality, including setting performance standards, and implementing EEO policies and procedures.
  • Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, to include establishment of priorities and preparation of schedules for completion of work.
  • Audits coded disease and injury diagnoses, acuity of care, and procedures in a wide range of ambulatory, inpatient and outpatient settings and specialties.
  • Conducts monthly coding audits for the command's Data Quality Management Control Program, utilizing established DQ guidelines.
  • Analyzes effectiveness of the DRG program and implements changes as needed. Assures policy is followed and that updates to regulations relating to the DRG program are instituted.
  • Conducts regular training with all medical staff members to ensure that each provider understands, follows, and is in compliance with all coding guidelines.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one-year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes1) coding medical records in accordance with ICD-10-CM and PCS Coding (International Classification of Disease, 10th edition Clinical Modification and Procedure Coding System); 2) auditing medical records for accuracy to meet coding productivity, policy, regulatory and/or legal requirements; AND 3) training staff on medical record coding. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Health Care Administration or Health Care Management.

Combination of Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

Candidates with The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certifications issued through AAPC (AAPC) or The Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P) certification issued by AHIMA (AHIMA) are highly preferred. Selected candidate will be required to obtain AAPC or AHIMA certification.
