Supervisory Architect
The individual selected for this position will perform the following:
Supervisory Duties
Provides professional leadership and administrative direction for a team of architects, interior designers and additional staff as required.
Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for employees, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system; Establishes performance goals, develops individual development plans, and ensures a mutual understanding of the performance standards.
Provides guidance on performance evaluations, including due dates, adequacy of the plans and evaluations.
Provides advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters.
Provides for employee skills enrichment and development through identification of opportunities for coaching, mentoring, and training and strives to achieve a standard level of work and collegiality across the team.
Provides leadership to ensure support for equal employment opportunity (EEO) goals and requirements.
Project and Program Management
Identifies actions required to execute the project and to accommodate changes leading to the assurance of architectural and interior design requirements and efficient use of resources during the lifecycle of the project.
Provides program management by exercising project control and authority throughout the various phases of architectural and interior design requirements.
Ensures that practices and methodologies in the architecture and interior design field are aligned with AOC standards, historic preservation principles, best practices, and incorporates where appropriate and applicable new methodologies, technologies and best practices learned internally or externally.
Architectural and Interior Design Management
Exercises responsibility for planning, design, direction, execution and control of architectural and interior design project and programs for the AOC.
Coordinates with Congressional staff offices and technical experts in architectural and interior design project design, testing, installation, maintenance, repair and operation.
Utilizes professional architectural and interior design knowledge to approve designs and scheduling.
Provides architectural and interior design analysis and advance planning for preservation, changes in real property management methodologies for engineering related matters and its impact for systems and capabilities for proposed projects.
Provides architectural and interior design guidance related to the unique architectural characteristics of AOC facilities through thorough review of design documents for the most economic and reliable design choices.
Reviews design concepts, calculations, final designs and construction documents for technical accuracy and compliance with contract documents and with AOC and national construction standards.
Technical Advice and Guidance
Works with all levels of local management and program officials, key personnel of other Agency locations, other government agencies and private industry to resolve and track complex and controversial problems that arise.
Assures the overall resolution of issues and identifies changes and repairs necessary for architectural and interior design compliance in AOC properties and develops comprehensive plans to carry out changes.
Maintains agency design standards; Monitors, reviews and revises architectural and interior design standards for consistency with current best practices, available materials and
technologies, and the high level of design quality and performance expectations of the agency.
Provides expert advice to the officials and staff of AOC jurisdictions, regarding architectural and interior design aspects of design, modernization, operation, repair and maintenance systems and equipment.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Specialized experience: is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
Candidates for the GS-15 grade level must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower (GS-14) grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience for this position is defined as having experience that demonstrates all of the following:
- Performing planning, design, oversight and execution of architectural and interior design projects, programs and operations;
- Providing leadership and administrative direction and control of project development activities, staff, resources and contractor performance;
- Developing innovative solutions to architectural and interior design project and program issues;
- Working with internal and external stakeholders, such as Congressional leadership, management, staff, external agencies and professional organizations on major architectural and/or interior design projects through various phases (i.e., planning, design and execution) to advance program objectives.
Education
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirements for this position, applicants must possess the following:
Education Required for Architects:
Degree: architecture; or related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished: (1) a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by at least one of the following:
- Related Curriculum: Degree in architectural engineering may be accepted.
- Experience: An applicant lacking a degree in architecture must have had l year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture. In the absence of college courses, 5 years of such experience is required. This experience must have demonstrated that the applicant has acquired a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture.
