- The nurse is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse's obligation to provide optimal care (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses).
- Provides a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process based on the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice.
- Utilizes clinical assessments to develop plans of care, which reflect therapeutic, educational, preventative, and rehabilitative aspects of care.
- Performs a comprehensive patient assessment including health history, physical examination, evaluations of deviations from the norm and age specific disease screening, immunizations, and health counseling.
- Formulates differential diagnosis and initiates appropriate intervention based on physical finds.
- Refer Veterans to specialty clinics when indicated. Orders and evaluates results of screening and diagnostic tests pertinent to patient complaints and physical findings.
- Determining the need for consultation from subspecialty clinics. Prescribes non-pharmacological therapies and treatments including, but not limited to, prosthetics, colostomy supplies, dressings, diets, etc.
- Performs phlebotomy procedures for obtaining specimens for diagnostic procedures.
- Advises, teaches, and counsels individuals, families and groups regarding identified health care needs and provides information for prevention of illness and injury.
- Receives and addresses telephone calls from patients and their representatives relating to clinical indications and patient condition.
- Performs Other assigned duties for GEC as indicated by the Chief of GEC and/or Physician of Home-Based Primary Care.

Exception to Licensure for Graduate Nurse Technicians. Candidates who otherwise meet the basic requirements, but do not possess the required licensure and/or certification, may be appointed at the entry step of the Nurse II, as a Graduate Nurse Technician - Nurse Practitioner on a temporary appointment up to any period not-to-exceed one year and a day under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 405(c)(2)(B).
Preferred Experience: Geriatrics clinical practice, primary care practice, home care/home visit experience

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity (including depth perception), keen hearing (aide permitted), clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity in both hands. Candidates with equivalent nurse practitioner masters or doctorate level degrees who possess current, full, active, and unrestricted registration and certification will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment.
