
Lead Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization/ Electrophysiology Technician)
Duties/ Responsibilities (are but not limited to)
- The The incumbent may assist the Cardiology MIT Supervisor, nurse manager and the directors of the Cath and EP laboratories with the acquisition and stocking of pharmaceuticals and general or specialized supplies used in each laboratory; may assist to monitor adequate supple levels and expiration dates on sterile supplies per hospital policy. May communicate effectively with GIP personnel and auxiliary ordering personnel as directed by the Cardiology MIT Supervisor and/or the Nurse Manager. will be familiar with hospital policy and provides knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements as needed or directed. Appropriate in services arranged as required, to ensure compliance with these policies and standards in all aspects of laboratory operations. These may include, but are not limited to, ensuring proper charting during each procedure, ensuring proper documentation of drug and conscious sedation medication administration to the patient during each procedure, ensuring compliance with infection control, industrial hygiene policies and radiation safety guidelines per radiation safety committee policies.
- The lead technician may assist the Cardiology MIT Supervisor, nurse manager and the directors of the Cath and EP laboratories with making recommendations concerning new and improving procedures. Proven ability to make recommendations concerning developments and training which would improve operations in the Cardiology department. Organizes and conducts meetings to further objectives.
- The lead technician will be responsible for working with technical staff to ensure adequate staffing levels for the lab patient care responsibilities. The incumbent may assist the Cardiology MIT Supervisor, nurse manager and the directors of the Cath and EP laboratories with designating a late person or deploying staff appropriately to effectively manage the cases scheduled, redeploying as required in the event of call-ins or vacancies
in the staffing levels.
- The lead technician will ensure efficient patient case flow by communication with cardiac
observation unit staff, with attending faculty and cardiology fellows as appropriate and
help facilitate patient transfers to and from the lab area as required.
- The incumbent may assist the Cardiology MIT Supervisor, nurse manager and the directors of the Cath and EP laboratories with the acquisition and stocking of pharmaceuticals and general or specialized supplies used in each laboratory; may assist to monitor adequate supple levels and expiration dates on sterile supplies per hospital policy. May communicate effectively with GIP personnel and auxiliary ordering personnel as directed by the Cardiology MIT Supervisor and/or the Nurse Manager.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of cardiac catheterization technician services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: KSAs 1, 2, 3, and 4 are appropriate for all positions at this level.
1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory
2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
3.Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
4. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training
Preferred Experience: Three years or more ofCatheterization or Electrophysiology experience along with active Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) certificates.

This position is above full performance.Physical Requirements: Must be able to travel to treatment areas with ease. Most of the time is spent working in the labs wearing Lead Aprons of 20 - 40 pounds. The incumbent must be able to stand for up to 8 - 10 hours in a Lead Apron while providing patient care. The incumbent must be able to lift up to 20 pounds of equipment, supplies and records. Additionally, the incumbent will be required to transport patients on stretchers, beds and wheelchairs. When not in a Lead Apron, there is the potential for extended periods of sitting at computer terminals. The incumbent is expected to use proper preventive ergonomic techniques to perform duties.

There is no education substitution at this GS-9 grade level.
