Job Summary
This position is located in the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS), Secure Programs. DYRS’ mission is to improve public safety and provide court-involved youth the opportunity to become more productive citizens by building on the strengths of youth and their families in the least restrictive, most home-like environment consistent with public safety. Emphasis will be placed on best practices for interacting with youth, via short-term basic programming for youth in temporary short-term detention; or a treatment-oriented milieu for youth in longer-term custody depending on the legal status of the youth and based on the principles of Positive Youth Development.
The incumbent in this role will provide program, technical and administrative support, as well as coordinate special projects and prepare comprehensive reports on studies and other special assignments under the direction of the Supervisor.
Duties And Responsibilities
The Program Support Specialist will provide assistance in planning, organizing, and conducting analytical studies based on examination of management needs. The incumbent will assist in developing, reviewing and evaluating procedures, improving operational efficiency, and making authoritative recommendations to improve services. Provides assistance in improving effectiveness in meeting schedules, deadlines, priorities and program goals. Reviews, prepares, or assists with the preparation of reports, correspondence and program documents. Under Supervisor’s guidance, coordinates and resolves general management matters and other appropriate issues and projects related to the functional responsibilities of the department.
Briefs the Supervisor on confidential matters pertaining to administrative operations; recommends courses of action. Keeps Supervisor informed of activities occurring when s/he is away for extended periods. Handles complaints and problems of a complex nature refereed by colleagues or as directed by the Supervisor. Obtains, coordinates and prepares or edits responses for administrative and programmatic information requests. Receives and reviews incoming correspondence, performs required research and prepares appropriate replies. Performs quantitative and qualitative studies for evaluating the performance of the program and prepares reports as necessary to ensure that the objectives of the program are achieved.

Specialized Experence is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

The work is performed in an office setting which is adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Some tasks may require fieldwork in juvenile correctional facilities or community based residential or nonresidential settings.
