About The Position
The Milken Institute Philanthropy team seeks a talented professional with deep expertise in mental health to lead the development of new initiatives within the Science Philanthropy Accelerator for Research and Collaboration (SPARC) portfolio. Within MI Philanthropy, our SPARC portfolio facilitates investment across a range of scientific focus areas—including mental health, oncology, neurodegeneration, rare diseases, and more.
We’re looking for a thoughtful, collaborative, and detail-oriented individual with strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills—and a track record of working across the spectrum of mental and behavioral health, from foundational neuroscience to models of care and policy. The ideal candidate is passionate about generating new insights to improvemental health outcomes through biomedical research, strategic philanthropic investment, and systems innovation. We are looking for a colleague to advance our efforts in mental health, ensuring we integrate scientific, clinical, and systems-level perspectives to accelerate discovery and impact in collaboration with Milken teams and partner organizations.
Responsibilities
This position will work in a professional office environment on a hybrid schedule consisting of three (3) days per week reporting in-person to the Washington, DC office location (Tuesday – Thursday), with the remaining two (2) days working remotely. Please understand, this schedule is subject to change at the Institute’s sole discretion.
This person will also be required to travel occasionally to other offices and/or venues to assist with events as needed, requiring occasional work outside of traditional hours. Domestic travel is possible. Additionally, this position requires interacting virtually on a regular basis with Milken Institute staff based in other locations in the United States and around the world.

Responsibilities
- Lead Due Diligence : Conduct in-depth due diligence for mental health-focused initiatives. This includes assessing scientific research (e.g., neuroscience, psychiatry, behavioral sciences), care delivery models, prevention strategies, therapeutic pipelines, nonprofit and advocacy stakeholder roles, and systemic gaps and opportunities. Synthesize evidence from basic biology to population health and services research.
- Develop Funding Strategies: Design strategic investment approaches that align with scientific and philanthropic goals. Leverage an understanding of translational research, mental health systems, community-based care, and innovation in funding mechanisms and partnerships.
- Advisory Board Management : Coordinate and manage scientific advisory boards and expert panels, particularly in mental health. This includes organizing meetings, preparing briefing materials, synthesizing input, and integrating feedback into strategy development
- Content Development : Produce executive-level written materials and presentations to communicate complex scientific, clinical, and systems insights to diverse stakeholders, including philanthropists, researchers, nonprofit leaders, and others.
- External Representation : Represent the Milken Institute at industry events, conferences, and within the broader health and science communities to build relationships and identify collaborative opportunities.
- Communications & Outreach : Contribute to the development of communication strategies and materials to raise awareness of key funding opportunities and promote MI Philanthropy’s mission within the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors
- Duties as assigned
- Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a mental health related field (e.g., clinical psychology, neuroscience, psychiatry, behavioral science, public mental health) with 3+ years of experience in relevant professional settings. Candidates with translational, clinical, public health, or health policy experience in mental or behavioral health are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Knowledge of and curiosity across multiple levels of mental health science, including biology, diagnostics, interventions, social determinants, and care models.
- Experience in navigating the mental and behavioral health research landscape, including federal funding mechanisms, nonprofit efforts, and industry trends.
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex science and systems-level insights for different audiences, from philanthropists and policymakers to research collaborators and nonprofit leaders.
- Experience with project or program management, ideally in scientific, nonprofit, or health-related settings.
- Engaging and compelling writer with experience communicating scientific concepts for both technical and lay audiences.
- High intellectual capacity that can be and has been applied to learning new areas of science, technology, and related fields,
- Personal qualities should include being engaging, proactive, independent, rigorous, curious, action-oriented, flexible, willing to adapt to changing situations, and having a good sense of humor.
