You’ll handle lawsuit files to conclusion and coordinate the activities of defense counsel. License/Certification/Designation: State licensing where required. Successful completion of required/applicable claims certification training/classes. Obtain Xactimate Level 1 certification within a year of start date. Obtain Xactimate Level 2 certification within two years of employment.
Experience: Ten of years Commercial Large Loss or General Adjuster. May substitute for commensurate commercial construction experience. Field management experience preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Requires advanced understanding of commercial property insurance operations, field and staff functions, industry trends, and project management. Proven superior knowledge of best claims practices used to resolve the most serious and complex property commercial claims. Validated knowledge of insurance contracts, and familiar with court proceedings affecting legal liability for all lines of insurance. Knowledge of claims systems. Confirmed technical knowledge of commercial building construction, strong comprehension of Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR), knowledge of electrical and plumbing plus contents management skills. Understands business interruption loss management. Ability to operate various claims systems and related software. Xactimate skill level 2 knowledge. Proven ability to meet customer needs and provide exemplary service by informing customers of the claims process and ensuring a positive customer experience. Demonstrated decision-making and analytical skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to connect with field leadership, staff management and other departments. Ability to provide a multi-jurisdictional analysis of coverage and damages; Participate in the oversight and analysis regarding the selection and direction of defense counsel in cases involving serious and sometimes complex commercial property issues from inception through trial. Organizational skills to effectively establish work priorities in accordance with objectives and standards. Ability to operate personal computer and related software. Possesses the best customer service skills. Ability to coordinate with defense counsel on legal cases involving serious and sometimes complex coverage and property issues, from inception through trial.

Able to make physical inspections of accident scenes and property loss sites. Able to climb ladders, balance at various heights, stoop, bend and/or crawl to inspect vehicles and structures. Able to work outside in all types of weather. Able and willing to work irregular hours and to travel with possible overnight requirements. May be on-call. Must be available to work catastrophes (CAT). Significant travel (up to 75%) required for this position. Required to handle $500,000K and above losses, sophisticated coverage, high profile and severity losses as requested regardless of dollar exposure. These losses are throughout the country, requiring extensive travel and overnight stays.
- Conducts on-site field investigations and/or field re-inspections of large exposure commercial claims. Coordinates rebuilding of commercial building damages with contractors, specialists and engineers. Provides advice, counsel, and training to field operations. Recommends various methods of dispute resolution and settlement in those cases where warranted.
- Opens, closes and adjusts reserves in alignment with company practices designed to ensure reserve adequacy. Recommends Special Reserves where appropriate, per Corporate Reserving Guidelines. Adheres to file conferencing notification and authority procedures.
- Maintains current knowledge of: assigned insurance lines; court decisions which may impact the claims function; current guidelines in the claims function; and policy changes and modifications. This may require attendance at various seminars or training sessions.
- Mentors selected associates to develop commercial property technical and building knowledge.
- Creates and analyzes severe incident reports, reinsurance reports and other information to home office, claims management, and underwriting. Participates in quality assurance reviews. Performs re-inspections for the Technical Office as requested. Participate in CAT events as requested by the Technical and or Field Office.
- Leads or is a member of various project teams as assigned, based on business need.
- Assists Underwriting and Products in the review and development of new or existing policy language.
- May document assigned commercial property topic(s) and be the subject matter authority for that topic.
- Participates in Commercial Technical School training classes, initiatives and course creation.

Working Conditions: Normal office or field claims environment. May require ability to sit and use telephone and personal computer for extended periods of time. Able to make physical inspections of accident scenes and property loss sites. Able to climb ladders, balance at various heights, stoop, bend and/or crawl to inspect vehicles and structures. Able to work outside in all types of weather. Able and willing to work irregular hours and to travel with possible overnight requirements. May be on-call. Must be available to work catastrophes (CAT). Significant travel (up to 75%) required for this position. Must have a valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record in accordance with Nationwide standards.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. The expected starting salary range for Commercial Claims General Adjuster : $106,000.00 - $158,000.00
