Position Description
The Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of South Florida in Tampa invites applications for a 9-month, full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Instruction, to begin August 7, 2025 with the possible extension for a second and/or third year.
The Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at USF has more than 125 students pursuing an undergraduate major, concentration, or 1 of 2 minors; a core of 8 full-time faculty in the department; and 70 allied and affiliate faculty across the university. We have a graduate program that offers a master’s degree and a graduate certificate and employs 8-10 teaching assistants/year. One of the oldest women’s studies departments in the country, WGSS at USF was the first public university in Florida to offer a BA degree. For more information, visit usf.edu/wgss.

The successful candidate for this 4-4 teaching position will be responsible for large-enrollment face-to-face and/or online undergraduate courses in the WGSS core and elective curriculum, including “Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies” and “Human Sexual Behavior.” This position involves minimal service expectations; however, the successful candidate will be responsible for mentoring and supervising graduate teaching assistants, who serve as graders in large-enrollment classes. Our Visiting Assistant Professor of Instruction joins a dedicated and collegial teaching community.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Women’s, Gender, and/or Sexuality Studies from an accredited institution or a Ph.D. in a related field with a graduate certificate or concentration in Women’s, Gender, and/or Sexuality Studies. ABD applicants must have Ph.D. in hand before Aug. 7, 2025. Applicants should have a minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience as instructor of record. Specialization is open, but applicants must be able to teach WGSS undergraduate core and elective courses, particularly “Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies” and “Human Sexual Behavior,” online and in-person on campus employing best practices of feminist/queer pedagogies. Applicants must provide evidence of effective teaching and must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor of Instruction.
Preferred Qualifications
Ideal candidates will demonstrate a successful record teaching “Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies” and/or “Human Sexual Behavior,” “Sexualities,” or the equivalent.
