Job Summary / Purpose

The patient companion performs close and/or continuous observation of pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients who may be at risk for adverse events such as falls, self-injury or harm to others in accordance with the training and established methods and procedures of the hospital. The patient companion provides direct observation of patients as directed by a nurse.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of the nursing staff and/or nursing supervisor.
  • Adheres to clinical policies and procedures when performing patient companion tasks
  • Is flexible: copes successfully with a variety of situations, personalities and the changing work environment.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the importance of safety
  • Communicates with patients in a manner that is respectful of their age, culture, and education
  • Only accepts delegated tasks competent to perform, and communicates need for additional information, assistance or guidance as needed
  • Performs timely and accurate documentation as required by area of employment
  • Greets patients and visitors with friendly manner upon arrival and orients them to the room/unit.
  • Applies the knowledge and skills needed to do the job
  • Keeps informed about practices, procedures, and new developments related to own work.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education for Staff Job Levels

  • High School graduate or equivalent

Required Licensure And Certifications

  • BLS within 30 days of employment

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred
