Job Summary

The Director, Research will be responsible for overseeing the research projects of CSC’s Research & Training Institute (RTI). This position requires a Mixed-Methods Researcher with strong qualitative research skills to identify research needs, prioritize, develop, and execute research plans. The successful candidate should also have a data-driven mindset and have the ability to weave together qualitative and quantitative survey or behavioral data-based methods for comprehensive insights. The Director, Research will guide hypothesis generation for patient experience data collection and analysis using range of qualitative methods: focus groups, in-depth interviews, usability testing using online discussion boards or chats, participant observation, and content analysis of various textual, visual, or experiential data.

The candidate will also have experience in survey and questionnaire design, sampling, and statistical analyses of survey or behavioral data. The candidate should be a highly skilled presenter and able to use different techniques to ensure their research findings have the highest impact for lay and expert audiences. The candidate should be able to use guiding research questions to create focus groups and interview guides for qualitative projects and survey questionnaires for quantitative projects. The candidate should be able to conduct qualitative data collection and analysis, including focus groups, interviews, and discussion boards, and collect and analyze quantitative data, including survey questionnaires. The candidate should also be able to manage their research plans through fast-changing environments, align and efficiently execute critical insights and work with a large group of external and internal partners.

The Director, Research will work closely with funding partners, researchers to ideate and define research questions and deliver generative and evaluative research. The Director, Research will also work with other CSC departments, including the Education and Programs teams to develop research questions and protocols to understand needs for educational materials and programs, in addition to evaluating the efficacy of these programs. Develop, recommend, and lead program evaluation, including material development and testing, such as analyzing and collecting qualitative and quantitative data through focus groups, interviews, discussion boards, surveys, and content analysis. The Director, Research will also lead research-related tasks for the health equity, policy, network partner, and leadership teams as needed, such as literature reviews, mixed-methods data collection and analysis, and reporting, such as drafting abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations for academic, industry, and policy audiences. The candidate must be skilled at collaborating with researchers and non-research partners to achieve project goals, including industry sponsors and collaborators.

Essential Functions

RESEARCH DESIGN, DATA COLLECTION, & ANALYSIS:

  • Partner closely with other researchers to identify and execute research initiatives.
  • Adapt methods to the research question using qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Generate research questions and design mixed-methods study protocols, including IRB protocols, literature

reviews, recruitment materials, focus group & interview guides, surveys, and analytic plans.

  • Design and lead studies that examine people's experiences with cancer.
  • Develop focus group & interview guides, discussion board activities, and surveys to collect data.
  • Lead data collection, monitoring, cleaning, and analysis for various research studies (focus groups, interviews,

surveys).

  • Clean, manage, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data using appropriate software and generate reports

based on study goals.

  • Oversee data collection and analysis by contractors for cultural-adaptation projects.
  • Support data quality control and monitoring, including survey testing, daily response review, identifying and

filtering spam, and assessing participant eligibility.

  • Determine sample stratification plan and select study participants based on key variables in study design.
  • Review educational materials and program outlines for responsiveness to the perceptions, attitudes, and

experiences of patients, survivors, and caregivers.

  • Train team members in qualitative and survey data collection, cleaning, and analysis

Collaboration, Communication, & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with industry partners, academic research partners, network partners, and

various CSC teams (health equity, education, policy, etc.).

  • Communicate results in compelling and clear ways to lay and expert audiences, including industry funders,

network partners, patient advocates, and other social science researchers.

  • Engage with CSC Network Partners across the United States and with industry research partners to develop

study goals and research protocols.

  • Serve as a public face of CSC at policy summits, academic conferences, and other public engagements.
  • Collaborate with education, programs, and policy departments to design proposals that develop and/or evaluate

materials and programs using mixed-methods approaches.

  • Present findings at academic and non-academic conferences (posters, abstracts, podium presentations).
  • Work with industry and other research partners to generate engaging written reports and presentations to

support research initiatives.

  • Communicate qualitative and quantitative research findings and methods to non-qualitative and non-quantitative stakeholders, including patient advocates and network partners.

Project Management, Proposal Writing, & Resource Development

  • Effectively manage and prioritize multiple research plans through fast-changing environments.
  • Generate recruitment strategies and support recruitment efforts through outreach and partnership

development.

  • Secure resources for future research-related projects across departments and ensure sustainability of these

projects.

  • Work with Executive Director and/or Senior Director to conceptualize and draft research proposals to attract

funding from industry partners, foundations, and state and federal funders.

  • Collaborate with various teams to support proposal writing for research-focused projects related to educational

materials and program development.

  • Perform other duties as directed by the Executive Director or Senior Director to further the work of research,

education, programs, and policy teams.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • PhD in applied social sciences and human behavior, including psychology, behavioral science, sociology, health service delivery research industrial/organizational psychology, patient preference and decision-making theory, health outcomes research, or other relevant field.
  • 8- 10 of experience preferred with qualitative and quantitative research leadership, design, and execution.
  • Survey design and analysis experience.
  • Experience with survey design, recruitment, sampling and sample stratification, and response effects
  • Knowledge of individual and group based qualitative methods, as well as quantitative, behavioral analysis, and statistical concepts including survey design.
  • Experience designing and executing mixed-methods studies independently and on teams.
  • Experience working with multi-method studies.
  • Mixed method experience, leading with qualitative methods: focus groups, in-depth interviews,, usability testing, discussion boards, including remote as well as field studies.
  • Experience cleaning, managing, coding, and analyzing qualitative data using QDA software, including NVIVO.
  • Experience cleaning, managing, and analyzing quantitative data using statistical software, including SPSS.
  • Experience programming surveys and collecting data using Qualtrics survey software.
  • Experience with survey and questionnaire design, log analysis, sampling, and statistical analyses of survey or behavioral data
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with diverse stakeholders, including industry partners, other researchers, patient advocates, network partners, healthcare providers, and lay audiences.
  • Mastery of Office suite and reference software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and EndNote reference software.
  • Detail and process-oriented; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
