  • Serves as an escort to visitors in public and non-public spaces.
  • Maintain access control and escorts National Gallery contractors in locations vulnerable to crimes against persons, theft, vandalism, and other damage.
  • Control access by monitoring the identification credentials for National Gallery employees, contractors and visitors entering controlled areas and referring persons who lack proper credentials to a control point to arrange access.
  • Deny admission to undesirable or unauthorized persons, prevents unauthorized removal of National Gallery property, answers inquiries from National Gallery employees, contractors, or visitors. Is alert for unusual conditions and incidents, and immediately investigates and assesses abnormal conditions.
  • May be required to secure buildings, sound alarms, detain violators or call for police assistance.
  • Initiates appropriate response to alarm devices which may be installed in remote locations away from the Security Command Center.
  • Enforce federal and local laws and National Gallery rules and regulations to ensure the welfare and the safety of visitors and employees, and to protect priceless and irreplaceable works of art.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations that require taking notes and preparing reports. Detects and prevents offenses; pursues and arrests violators. and initiate emergency procedures to cope with the situation.

Must be able to work in closed and confined spaces, such as a security booth and underground facilities with a wide variance of temperature. Must have the agility and ability to subdue violent suspects. Must be able to hear conversational voice and radio transmissions, and able to convey information via portable radio and telephone at a normal conversational volume.
