The Electric Boat Naval Architecture Department (D496) is comprised of engineers who are responsible for determining the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic characteristics of submarines, providing waterfront hydrostatics support and providing technical oversight to Electric Boats waterfront infrastructure. What We Do:
Engineers in the Naval Architecture Department are responsible for concept design, hydrodynamic and hydrostatic analyses, and waterfront shipyard support activities. This position is looking for engineers interested in using Naval Architecture fundamentals to influence the design and construction of current and future submarines. As a department with broad responsibilities, engineers will be asked to take on challenges in many areas.
With the continued rapid construction of VIRGINIA class submarines, and the new construction of COLUMBIA class submarines, Department 496 will have need for a driven and diverse engineering team. With their project diversity and direct connection to the Groton waterfront shipyard, the department interfaces with many areas of the business. Background or experience in marine vehicle design is strongly preferred.

- Concept design activities include design requirement trade-off assessments, early design optimization, team leadership and development of initial hydrostatic estimates.
- Hydrodynamic analyses include hydrodynamic loading of flow-exposed structure, maneuvering analysis, hull and control surface shaping, and whole-boat resistance.
- Hydrostatic calculations include determination of tank volumes, ship displacement, trim, draft, surfaced and submerged ship stability, and evaluation of damage conditions.
- Waterfront activities include support of blocking, docking, submarine launching, and barge transportation of major hull sections.

Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering with a background in marine design or fluid mechanics
- Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture or Ocean Engineering
- An advanced degree and/or experience in a related field
