The manager of communications will generate marketing copy for the Department of Marketing and Communications. The manager will be an important member of the team in conveying the university brand to its various audiences. The manager will create original content and/or modify existing content for a variety of purposes to meet the needs of the department and its clients. This includes, but is not limited to, enrollment services, advancement, the president’s office, student life, academic departments, advertising, the website, social media, and the university magazine. The manager of communications will report to the director of marketing and communications and will work closely internally with all team members in the Department of Marketing and Communications, as well as other key stakeholders, including senior leadership.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Create marketing copy for marketing and advertising materials for internal and external audiences, such as brochures, postcards, emails, fundraising collateral, posters, billboards, etc.
  • Create marketing copy for the university website.
  • Create marketing copy for the university’s social media platforms.
  • Create marketing copy for the university’s annual print magazine.
  • Contribute to creation and design of university merchandise and apparel.
  • Contribute to enhancing the university’s overall brand and messaging efforts.
  • Contribute to the creation of the university’s communications strategy and plan.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Marketing and Communications to plan, schedule, prioritize, supervise, and carry to completion projects that require marketing copy solutions.
  • Formulate and/or supervise the development and execution of the overall messaging concepts of projects and how they are conveyed.
  • Other additional duties as assigned.

Competency

The manager will be assigned extended multiple projects that must be completed within a set timeframe. Must be a self-motivated, detailed-oriented person with exceptional organizational, verbal, written, interpersonal and planning skills with ability to meet deadlines. The manager must be able to work in a team environment with keen work ethic, initiative and ability to work through ambiguous situations.

Education/Experience

Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university required; and one to three years related professional experience in content generation; professional experience in marketing and/or communications strongly preferred; professional experience in a higher education setting preferred.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, the manager must have the ability to use Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Teams, email and collaborative platforms, such as Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms), MailChimp, Kajabi, texting applications, notification systems, etc. Strong social media skills are preferred.

Language Ability

Strong copywriting skills for marketing to prospective students, parents, alumni, and other diverse audiences, with the ability to be concise, accurate, and interesting, with a minimum of editing required. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public (good customer relation skills). Ability to edit professionally and tactfully.

Math Ability

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Good research skills, both for developing original stories and for finding and expanding on existing content.
