Project Rousseau is a non-profit organization that empowers youth in communities with the greatest need to excel in higher education. The majority of the young people served by Project Rousseau are homeless and/or asylum seekers, placing us at the forefront of the humanitarian migrant crisis in New York City. Through our Immigration Legal Services, we don't just offer legal aid; we provide a pathway to hope and opportunity. Position Overview:

We are seeking a compassionate and culturally aware ESL Coordinator to join our team. This role focuses on providing and coordinating English language to asylum seekers, particularly those from West Africa, helping them improve their language skills and prepare for higher education or workforce readiness.

At Project Rousseau, we empower young people to navigate the complexities of the immigration system, understand their rights, and pursue pathways to legal status and stability. Your work as an ESL Coordinator will be pivotal in ensuring these young people have the language skills necessary to succeed in their education and build a safer, brighter future in the USA.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement engaging and effective ESL lesson plans tailored to the specific needs of West African asylum seekers.
  • Provide instruction in English language skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
  • Utilize culturally relevant materials and teaching strategies that resonate with students’ backgrounds.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel safe and motivated to learn.
  • Conduct regular assessments to monitor students' progress and adjust teaching methods accordingly.
  • Collaborate with other Project Rousseau staff to provide holistic support to students, including addressing social and emotional needs.
  • Offer one-on-one tutoring or small group instruction as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and outcomes.
  • Coordinate a volunteer ESL tutor program to supplement instruction

Qualifications:

  • Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • TEFL/TESOL certification or experience in ESL instruction is preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching ESL
  • Skills and Attributes
  • Strong understanding of the unique challenges faced by asylum seekers and immigrant
  • Ability to create a welcoming and supportive learning environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in French or another West African language is a plus.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration with young people, management, and program staff.

Work Schedule: Full time, 35 hours per week OR Part time (pro-rata salary) considered.

Job Location: 1560 Broadway, NY, 10036, please note this is an in-person role. Candidates should be comfortable with being in-person at least 4 days per week.

Salary Range: $53,000 to $65,000/year (pro-rata for part-time)
