Learning Gateway at the School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for an eLearning Experience and Accessibility Developer (referred to as Developer).

Under the general direction of the Director of eLearning, this position provides eLearning design and development support including but not limited to development of online eLearning modules and supplementary learning materials. Learning Gateway eLearning modules directly serve UW Medicine residents, fellows, and faculty. Additionally, some modules are delivered to healthcare professionals throughout the WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) region. eLearning is delivered through various learning management systems that reach the broad audiences we serve.

POSITION PURPOSE
The Developer works both independently and collaboratively to develop and update web-based professional education modules. This position directly reports to the Director of eLearning.

Learning Gateway and this position work closely with the Learning Technologies & Infrastructure and School of Medicine Academic Learning Technologies teams in deploying training to medical professionals and trainees in UW.

POSITION COMPLEXITIES
  • Use current best practices, research trends, and eLearning methodology to develop online learning modules for physicians.
  • Interact with various departments from different specialties and functions in UW Medicine. This position will work with individuals at various levels including administrators, residents, fellows, faculty, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Promote data security and integrity, as well as other confidentiality standards of UW Medicine, the GME (Graduate Medical Education) Office and the School of Medicine.
  • Deliver functional web-based training modules and other web applications as required by the specifications of the online training.
  • Meet all internal and external deadlines, according to negotiated project plans and timelines.
  • Assess and improve accessibility and inclusivity through collaboration, advocacy, and training.

    POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY
    The clinical competencies online curriculum for UW Medicine staff and clinicians, which is accessed primarily through the Learning Hub (UW Medicine's Learning Management System) is a mission-critical component of the strategic and quality improvement initiatives of the major teaching sites at UW Medicine. The Developer has responsibility and accountability for projects to be delivered on the Learning Hub, ensuring that learners receive appropriate instruction regarding clinical policies and procedures on a timely basis. They are responsible for ensuring accessibility and inclusivity of the eLearning modules, which allows for greater influence from diverse populations. This position works with individuals from the level of department heads and faculty to medical residents, clinical fellows and other healthcare workers across UW Medicine.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    eLearning Design and Development (70%):
  • Develop and participate in the instructional design of high-quality eLearning modules for healthcare professionals using Articulate Storyline.
  • Advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles through design and development practices that incorporate input from diverse stakeholders and actively address barriers to an equitable learning experience.
  • Apply principles of universal design to create eLearning modules that provide multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression to accommodate diverse learners and foster an inclusive learning experience.
  • Define and extend visual design systems to create a holistic and inclusive approach to typography, color, patterns, layouts, imagery, and more.
  • Collaborate closely with the instructional designer to visually interpret educational concepts, ensuring that the design harmonizes functional and emotional aspects. This collaboration will focus on creating a user experience that reflects usability, accessibility, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and human-centered design principles.
  • Develop style guidelines, specifications, patterns, and other deliverables to document the essential elements of a design solution for development and future use.
  • Create inclusive, engaging, and informative data visualizations and infographics using Adobe Creative Suite and other tools as indicated.
  • Implement strategies for diverse representation and inclusion within the organization's eLearning programs, such as sourcing diverse images and voices for multimedia content and incorporating inclusive narratives.
  • Provide quality assurance and troubleshooting for eLearning module delivery issues across multiple platforms and devices.
  • Submit modules to the LMS (Learning Management System) and isolate and resolve technical issues for eLearning modules delivered across multiple platforms and devices.
  • Utilize skills in illustration and video editing to reinforce educational goals and create compelling learning experiences as needed, including creating transitions, animation, motion design, and video interactions.

    Accessibility and Inclusivity (20%):
  • Stay updated on the latest trends and best practices in accessibility and inclusive design to ensure that all eLearning modules meet or exceed current accessibility standards.
  • Conduct accessibility audits of existing eLearning content and recommend improvements to enhance accessibility for all learners.
  • Collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including subject matter experts, instructional designers, and accessibility specialists, to ensure that eLearning materials are accessible to learners of all backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Advocate for and implement accessibility best practices in the development and delivery of eLearning modules, ensuring compliance with relevant standards such as WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).
  • Provide training and resources to the eLearning development team on accessibility standards and inclusive design principles.
  • Develop accessible eLearning content that includes alternative text, captions, transcripts, and other necessary accommodations to support diverse learners.
  • Create reports, documentation, and guidelines for accessibility improvements and compliance.
  • Assess and recommend accessibility testing tools and assistive technologies to support and enhance accessibility efforts.

    General (10%):
  • Engage in continuous self-reflection and professional development to enhance personal understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion and apply this knowledge to contribute to a more inclusive work environment and learning culture.
  • Collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including subject matter experts, instructional designers, and accessibility experts, to ensure that eLearning materials are accessible to learners of all backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Meet project milestones, communicate issues and risks in a timely manner, and manage internal stakeholder expectations.
  • Participate in annual eLearning Launch activities such as testing and planning.
  • Archive large and complex project folders, following naming conventions and record retention rules.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in any field or equivalent education and professional experience.
  • At least three years of experience in graphic and visual development of eLearning or equivalent products, including experience in accessibility.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to provide a portfolio of sample development work.
  • Experience with Articulate Storyline or similar eLearning authoring tools.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools for the creation of audio, video, and graphic design content.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, or similar.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, work independently, prioritize tasks, and work as a team member.
  • Ability to juggle multiple concurrent projects and priorities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on projects.
  • Ability to evaluate complex information, identify key issues that need to be addressed, and develop courses of action that effectively address those issues.
  • Strong data management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least five years of experience in graphic and visual development of eLearning or equivalent products.
  • Previous experience in healthcare professional education.
  • Experience with integration testing of eLearning modules within an Enterprise Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Experience in user-centered design methodologies.
  • Experience developing performance support content.
