Sterling is the largest manufacturer of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and is now offering a new approach to structural mass timber with a simplified, streamlined and cost-competitive product line. Our TerraLam CLT is scalable, cost-competitive and has the potential to rapidly decarbonize our built environment.

Position Summary

The Mass Timber Specialist plays a key role in the organization, generating leads, following up on existing prospects and educating AEC stakeholders on the potential of CLT in their construction projects in identified target markets. This remote position will work directly with Sterling Structural design and project management teams and report to the Director of Mass Timber.

Travel Requirements

Overnight travel is required up to 25%.

Essential Functions

  • Drive sales of CLT to national construction projects, meeting lead generation and sales goals
  • Provide early-stage technical guidance to project teams considering TerraLam CLT incorporation into mass timber or hybrid structural systems
  • Set up and deliver educational and/or sales presentations to AEC firms interested in mass timber
  • Build lasting relationships with developers, architects, engineers, and general contractors to support Sterling Structural's presence as a leading supplier and fabricator of CLT
  • Prospect leads through multiple channels and continuously assess project leads for viability
  • Nurture qualified opportunities and close sales by supporting project teams through the specification process
  • Estimate budgets and timelines for new and current prospective projects based on 2D/3D building data, an understanding of Sterling pricing and capacity and client needs in conjunction with Sterling's design and operations teams
  • Maintain adept understanding of the latest mass timber/pre-fab trends to support sales strategy
  • Suggest product development plans and direction reacting to industry input and anticipating market trends to propel utilization
  • Manage bid sites, project folders and CRM entries for active pipeline
  • Produce accurate sales forecasts using CRM workflows
  • Identify and represent company at relevant industry tradeshows, conferences and events
  • All other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Up-to-date knowledge and in depth understanding of technical properties, code compliance, installation, and integration of mass timber in residential and commercial construction markets, particularly CLT
  • A proven track record in business development focused on structural building products, sustainability and mass timber construction.
  • Minimum 5 years of technical sales experience in architecture, engineering or construction (mass timber or pre-fabrication focus preferred) P.E./S.E. is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly public speaking
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work through complex design challenges.

Work Environment:

This position is primarily located within an office although will be required to go out onto the production floor, travel on occasion including to field and site locations.

The employee must frequently use hands and fingers to use computers, calculators, write letters, sign documents, and pick up files in the course of work. The employee is regularly required to position oneself to move and/or access files or other necessary equipment, and is rarely required to crouch, crawl climb or balance.
