Job Description:

To provide leadership and subject matter expertise to Intermountain Health staff and leaders as part of Intermountain Health's ongoing efforts to reduce operating and capital costs in its physical plants system wide. They provide energy, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and controls expertise on new construction and existing buildings. This position interfaces with internal and external partners as a representative of the Intermountain Health Energy Management Department.

Job Profile:

  • This is a system-wide role assigned to work on complex projects throughout the Intermountain system. This role works closely with the Facility Management and the Facility Design and Construction Departments to lead design, construction, commissioning, recommissioning, operations and maintenance to improve performance and reduce costs in facilities system wide. This position reports to the manager or director of the Energy Management Department.


  • Independent project management of large-size projects.
  • Develops system level strategy and direction.
  • Mentors other team members to increase their skill and knowledge.
  • Handles all aspects of energy/facility project management including scope, design, budget, contracts, implementation, verification, and utility incentives.
  • May directly manage others on the energy team.
  • Develops and utilizes standard metrics to assess the effectiveness of energy and water conservation efforts.
  • Works collaboratively with design engineers, project managers, and commissioning agents to implement projects, strategies, and promote energy optimization measures.
  • Teaches and trains facility management staff and leaders the principles of energy conservation and management, and the effect of proper maintenance procedures on energy consumption and equipment life.
  • Supports Facility Design and Construction and Facility Management by creating standards and guidelines related to mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, ensuring adherence to standards and guidelines, leading review of design documents from consulting design teams, leading commissioning and recommissioning of facility equipment.
  • Stays abreast of best practices, new technologies, market dynamics and trends, and acts as a subject matter expert and resource to others, advising on best practices and process improvement.
  • Works to implement energy efficient design and optimization strategies that protect Intermountain assets and operations.


Minimum Requirements

  • Nine years of applicable experience in facility management, energy management, or construction.
  • OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Math, or Science Discipline, plus a P.E. license and five years of applicable experience in facility management, energy management, construction, or consulting engineering.
  • OR
  • Master's Degree in Engineering, Math, or Science Discipline, plus a P.E. license and two years of applicable experience in facility management, energy management, construction, or consulting engineering.
  • OR
  • PhD Degree in Engineering, Math, or Science Discipline, plus a P.E. license.
  • Note: Education must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified.
  • AND
  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and architectural drawings and plans.
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of HVAC systems and equipment, including but not limited to: boilers, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, air handling equipment, and other terminal HVAC devices.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly the ability to summarize complex, technical issues in a concise manner for decision makers.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities with many internal customers.
  • Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet and e-mail, and scheduling applications.
  • Willingness and availability to travel throughout the Intermountain system as needed.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Designation
  • Certified Hospital Facility Manager (CHFM) Designation
  • Certification in building automation systems
  • Certification in building commissioning
  • Experience in healthcare facility design, construction, operations, maintenance, or energy management.
