General Purpose

This position is responsible for the operation of highly specialized diesel, gasoline, hydraulic and pneumatic powered heavy equipment and related heavy equipment. In addition this position is responsible for performing skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair work of airport buildings, taxiways, runways, roadway system, and related facilities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operate heavy equipment including but not limited to bucket loaders with multi attachments, excavator, skid steer, forklift, bulldozers, tractors, dump trucks sweepers, blowers, high-speed runway plows, vacuum sweeper etc.
  • Clean runways, taxiways and ramp areas of asphalt chips and debris.
  • Repair and maintain airport roads, runways, and taxiways; patch holes, lay asphalt and regrade for proper storage in a manner consistent with VOSHA and City safety standards.
  • Operate high-speed airport specific snow removal equipment on runways, taxiways and ramps includes but not limited to; spread de-icer and sand.
  • Communicates with FAA Air Traffic Control for clearance onto movement areas.
  • Maintain signage and pavement markings on roadway system, airfield runway and taxiway system and parking garage; line striping, work with templates and fabrication of signs.
  • Assist airport electricians as needed with airfield lighting system and electrical construction or renovation to airport structures.
  • Assist vehicle mechanics with general equipment maintenance as required, included but not limited to; airport vehicles, heavy equipment, welding, broom changes, plow blade changes.
  • Remove rubber from runway surfaces; chemically wash and flush rubber from runway using runway sweepers, and tanker trucks
  • Perform construction and maintenance duties on ramps, including but not limited to operate jackhammers and cut saws to break up damaged pavement, mix, pour and apply concrete to damaged areas.
  • Raise or lower storm drain and service covers; cut and remove pavement locate and reposition as needed.
  • Perform various maintenance and repair in terminal building and other facilities on airport property, including but not limited to painting, sealing, carpentry, glazing, basic plumbing, electrical and HVAC repairs , and wood working, welding, etc.
  • Perform general airport maintenance work as required including but not limited to, fence and gate repairs.
  • Operates snow plow equipment on access roads, sidewalk and parking garage surface to remove ice and snow, salt and sand.
  • Empty trash barrels as required on airport property, handle and recycle hazardous waste, tires and waste sludge as state and federal laws mandate. (hazardous waste including, but not limited to, cleaners, degreasers, lubricants, runway de-icers and waste sludge that collects in open storm water/sewer lines.)
  • Maintain grass areas landslide and on and off airfield including but not limited to, mowing along taxiways and runways, maintaining landscaping shrubs, flowerbeds, and plantings around airport grounds and buildings.

  • Perform related work as required.
  • Act as “Ambassador” for the City, carrying out work and interacting with co-workers and the public in a respectful, professional manner.
  • Carry out work in the field, and interact with the public in courteous and respectful manner, presenting self and City in a positive manner.
  • Position may require the operation of City vehicles and/or personal vehicles in order to conduct City business.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Other duties as assigned, including operation of various types of equipment, including but not limited to special duties for other divisions of the department, and other City departments, on a seasonal or project basis.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • High School diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in the construction trades, or related skill trades, with a background in either carpentry, electrical and/or plumbing, required.
  • Previous training and experience in use of related highway and construction equipment is preferred
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Class B CDL.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of Federal Aviation Airport Traffic Control procedures
  • Ability to effectively communicate with Air Traffic control and other maintenance vehicle operators while performing other duties.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to acquire the skill of operating heavy equipment.
  • Ability to acquire the skill of high-speed airport specific snow removal equipment.
  • Working knowledge of and skill in using small tools and equipment.
  • Employee must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of himself/herself or others
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Vermont State Driver’s license.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather.
  • May be required to be on-call.
  • Must learn and follow VOSHA safety rules and regulations
  • Must be a flexible team player that takes direction well, is safety conscious, customer-oriented, and willing and able to learn to operate all equipment and perform all tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to maintain professional appearance while engaging in field work, by refraining from any use of profanity, inappropriate language, or inappropriate behavior required.
  • Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
  • Ability to obtain a valid driver’s license within 45 days of hire and the continued maintenance of a valid driver’s license. Operation of a City vehicle or personal vehicle to conduct City business without providing proof of a valid driver's license to Human Resources will not be permitted. A valid driver’s license shall be defined as a current state of residence-issued license to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways. Position also requires the ability to be covered under the City’s vehicle insurance policy prior to operation of any City vehicles or non-City vehicles for City business.
