Job Overview:

The Cook reports to the Kitchen Manager and is responsible for collaborating with staff in planning and preparing meals. The Cook understands and complies with CAL/OSHA Safety and Health regulations by maintaining hazard free work environments, properly using and storing kitchen equipment, properly storing food and immediately reporting any hazardous working environment or injuries to the Kitchen Manager. The Cook builds and maintains positive and professional work relationships with other members of the kitchen staff.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Prepares and cooks food of all types on a daily basis and for special guests and/ or functions that are consistent with FDA/CAL/OSHA safety and health regulations. Collaborates with the Kitchen Manager and staff to plan menus, taking into account such factors as availability of ingredients and likely number f patrons. Regularly checks the quality of raw and cooked food products to ensure that health and quality standards are met. Properly stores and handles raw or prepared foods and non-food supplies in the refrigerator, freezer and storage room. Inspects supplies, equipment and work areas to ensure conformance with CAL/OSHA standards. Monitors sanitization practices to ensure that employees follow CAL/OSHA standards and regulations. Follows safety regulations, reporting injuries or any unsafe conditions and work practices to the Kitchen Manager. Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: This is a full time, non-exempt staff position. Work schedule is assigned by the Kitchen Manager. Position requires extensive standing, walking and reaching and may require picking up materials that may weigh as much as 50 pounds. Ability to work shifts, over weekends and on public holidays as needed. Must maintain a clean uniform, maintain good personal hygiene and uphold a professional manner. Interacts with visitors, faculty, and staff as needed.

Qualifications: High school diploma or GED preferred.5-10 years experience in a restaurant or similar setting required. Ability to understand and carry out direction and to prepare and cook foods of all types, either on a regular basis or for special guests or functions. The ability to plan meals and understand nutritional food value to provide healthy and well-balanced menus. Knowledge of health, safety and labor laws and regulations required by local/ state/ federal agencies including following the FDA food safety regulations. Extensive knowledge of food safety procedures. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with staff and management using an intermediate level of English. Must be able to work independently as well as be a team player.
