Schwab Asset Management (SAM) is comprised of proprietary and 3rd party investment management solutions, research and insights, and platform management, overseeing $800B in assets for our clients. SAM is looking for a Director role to support the Municipal Research Group. The Municipal Research Group is responsible for analyzing credit across the municipal credit spectrum and the entire yield curve. Our primary goal is to assess credit opportunities in the municipal space for the Schwab separately managed accounts, mutual funds, and ETFs. The Director will be responsible for:
  • Analyzing issuers and debt structures within the general government and revenue sectors; experience in the utility, transportation and the P-3 sub-sectors is a plus;
  • Support portfolio managers in the security selection process which includes providing sector and issuer-specific risk assessments;
  • Determining internal issuer/security ratings;
  • Preparing detailed, concise, and accurate credit reports;
  • Provide verbal credit presentations to large and small internal audiences;
  • Responsible for macro credit analysis of assigned sectors the municipal bond market;
  • Providing on-going surveillance of assigned security holdings.

The Director will report to a senior member of the credit group but will also work closely with other senior team members and mentor junior analysts.

Key factors for success in this role:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in financial markets, specifically fixed income;
  • Ability to think strategically and apply broad economic and municipal sector trends as a component of investment recommendations;
  • Strong fundamental and in-depth issuer-specific credit analysis skills involving a broad range of general government and revenue credits; special expertise in the utility (water, sewer, public power), transportation (airports, toll roads) and P-3 sectors would be a plus;
  • Experience analyzing lower rated municipal credits in the BBB / BB categories;
  • Experience writing detailed, concise, and accurate credit reports;
  • Strong technology skills, including a high level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel and CreditScope; experience with Bloomberg and credit model construction a plus;
  • Strong and effective interpersonal and presentation skills;
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple competing priorities within established deadlines;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in making appropriate credit recommendations.
What you have

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or CFA preferred
  • 10 years of municipal credit experience at rating agency, bond insurer or buy-side firm
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and coaching junior level employees


In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
