Job Description

Job Title: Electrical Engineer (Pulsed Power)

Location: San Leandro, CA

Fisica Inc., in San Leandro CA, focuses on developing cutting edge pulsed power systems, x-ray radiation sources, high-voltage switches & power-conditioning components. These core technologies are applied to build systems for flash x-ray imaging, electron beam sterilization, and for simulating radiation environments, such as space or a nuclear blast, to study how electronics, optics, and various materials are affected by x-ray radiation. The largest pulsed power systems built here produce millions of amps at millions of volts, delivered within hundreds of nanoseconds. Succeeding at these fast-paced, demanding conditions requires a talented team of curious, passionate scientists, designers, technicians, and engineers. The division conducts both R&D and manufacturing to serve a mix of government and commercial customers.

We are seeking a pulsed power engineer to join our team conducting design, research, and development, as well as providing testing services, in pulsed power technology and radiation effects using our large pulsed power machines. These machines generate x-rays to simulate radiation environments in well-shielded testing areas with nanosecond pulse durations. The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on work in a lab environment, data analysis, working on many phases of a large program from design through facilitation, and spirited discussions on data interpretation with the team. Come help our team develop, build, test, and run the next generation of pulsed power systems!

Essential Functions:

  • Provide engineering and scientific support to research, design, and development activities for pulsed power machines, systems, and components.
  • Communicate with customers to understand testing requirements and how to achieve them.
  • Contribute to the design, assembly, testing, and delivery of large pulsed power machines.
  • Contribute to the design and execution of experiments, either on physical machines or in simulations.
  • Use and apply standard electrical engineering, physics, and E&M principles, theories, and techniques.
  • Perform circuit analysis and computer simulation to make performance predictions and validate experimental results.
  • Tackle new and varied development problems where only general objectives are stated.
  • Apply scientific scrutiny to experimental and simulation results to interpret and draw conclusions.
  • Lead small teams to conduct tests on pulsed power machines and radiation sources.
  • Communicate results of experiments or simulations to the team or customers.
  • Contribute impactful R&D ideas to the team.
  • Actively engage to assure safety protocols are followed and take required safety training.
  • Physical abilities: lab work involving standing, bending, lifting, walking, reaching, etc
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical/mechanical systems in a lab or manufacturing environment.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience with pulsed power systems, high voltage systems, diagnostics, and related fields.
  • Experience setting up and troubleshooting experimental equipment such as vacuum systems, data acquisition systems (sensors/monitors, oscilloscopes, delay generators etc.), and electrical systems.
  • Comfortable with data analysis of physical timeseries data
  • Comfortable using basic hand/electrical tools
  • Comfortable reading engineering drawings
  • Enjoy figuring out how things work, taking things apart and putting back together
  • Detail oriented and observant of details
  • Driven by technical curiosity and an eagerness to learn
  • Experience with circuit simulation models, programming, or scientific simulation software (i.e. Python, MATLAB, a version of SPICE, CST, or similar)
  • Effective communication in oral and written technical English.

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role is $90,000 - $167,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. Fisica Inc. also offers a variety of benefits, including health and disability insurance, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, EAP, education assistance, parental leave, paid time off, and company-paid holidays. The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, and schedule type.
