Client is looking for a DNA scientist who has previously worked with CODIS.

Currently the team is working remotely, however there are times during each quarter that staff is required onsite. Candidates must reside in the commutable distance to Stafford VA.

Role Description:

We are seeking an experienced DNA Forensic Specialist with extensive knowledge of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) to join our dynamic team. As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will provide crucial product guidance, technical expertise, and direction for our CODIS software development program. This role is pivotal in ensuring the effective integration of forensic science best practices with the latest advancements in software development. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of working in DNA forensics, with hands-on experience in analyzing DNA evidence and maintaining compliance with national standards and protocols.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Subject Matter Expertise: Act as the primary forensic expert on the CODIS system, providing deep technical insight and direction on DNA analysis, database management, and forensic science best practices to guide the software development team.
  • Product Guidance: Work closely with software engineers, product managers, and developers to ensure the CODIS system meets the needs of forensic professionals, aligns with legal requirements, and incorporates technological innovations.
  • Requirement Gathering & Analysis: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather and document requirements for software improvements, ensuring alignment with forensic and legal protocols.
  • Quality Assurance: Participate in product testing and validation, reviewing software outputs to ensure the accurate processing of DNA profiles and compliance with CODIS standards.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Liaise with law enforcement agencies, forensic laboratories, and government stakeholders to align software features with user needs and ensure system updates enhance operational efficiency.
  • Training & Support: Provide training and technical support to internal teams and end users on forensic science applications and the use of CODIS. Develop user manuals, training materials, and guides as necessary.
  • Compliance & Standards: Ensure all product development and enhancements adhere to local, state, and federal regulations related to DNA forensics, including adherence to FBI and NDIS guidelines.
  • Continuous Improvement: Monitor trends in forensic science and software development to recommend product enhancements that ensure the CODIS software remains at the forefront of forensic technology.

MANDATORY SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

Note: Candidates who do not have the mandatory skills will not be considered

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Genetics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in DNA forensics, with hands-on experience in analyzing and interpreting DNA evidence, including experience working with CODIS.
  • In-depth knowledge of DNA analysis, forensic laboratory protocols, and the CODIS system, including compliance with FBI and NDIS standards.
  • Familiarity with forensic data management systems, database structures, and software development life cycles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex forensic and technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify issues and provide innovative solutions to improve software performance and user experience.
  • Highly detail-oriented with the ability to ensure compliance with forensic and legal standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience collaborating with software development teams or in a software development environment.
  • Experience providing training or technical support to forensic professionals.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws relating to DNA collection and storage.
