Description:

  • Performs duties under general direction for independent action and decision-making within the framework of the job; assists with researching and compiling information for and maintenance of the division budget and related activities; works with department managers providing and gathering relevant information for their department budgets; assists with preparing financial forecasts, cost proposals, cost-benefit analyses, etc.; monitors the use of budgeted resources, reviews departmental expenses vs. budget, and prepares reports for management that explain variances and use
  • Assists division management to develop, prepare, present and administer its financial plans; ensures the accuracy and timeliness of monthly, quarterly and year-end reporting requirements; stays abreast of any company financial reporting, practice, or policy changes that can impact the division
  • Fosters an effective working relationship with the Finance department to maintain balanced accounts and ensure continued department compliance to accounting procedures, policies, deadlines, etc.; reviews transaction reports; researches and resolves processing errors or other discrepancies; verifies supporting documents, confirms the content and all calculations in the information presented, and submits them to the approving authority; reviews and researches account information to respond to inquiries, trace the sources of problems, and resolve and/or explain discrepancies and variances; performs corrective actions to redirect funds, initiate or retrieve payments, balance accounts, etc.
  • Works with the division’s management team to develop the division budget and related activities; provides and gathers relevant information for each department’s budget; assists with the preparation of financial forecasts and cost proposals; monitors the use of budgeted resources, reviews departmental expenses vs. budget, and prepares reports for management that explain variances and use; works with the Finance Department to resolve financial issues
  • Assists with implementing, upgrading, or enhancing the department’s financial accounting systems; maintains and applies internal controls; documents process requirements, business processes, process flow, and systems enhancements; monitors the financial reporting process and other related activity within the company to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; provides operational advice, direction, and training to junior team members and other department representatives

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field and three years of job-related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of two years of corporate-level accounting or financial analyst experience in an organization of comparable size
  • Insurance accounting experience (preferred)

Job Knowledge & Skills

  • Broad knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), SEC and other federal regulations, Statutory Accounting Principles (SSAP), state insurance department statutes, and other state regulations (with an emphasis on insurance and/or investment accounting)
  • Broad knowledge of principles and practices of accounting and financial systems applications (SAP preferred), including input/output processing and complex system concepts
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience performing complex financial analyses and related valuation methodologies, systems, and quantitative business-based analysis, metrics, and experimental designs; ability to prepare statistical studies and trend analyses using internal and external information to demonstrate relevant changes and recommend improvements or solutions
  • Demonstrated competencies in cost management and project management
