Overall Objectives of Position

The Senior Accountant is expected to provide support to the Controller-Tribal Government and the Tribe’s Chief Financial Officer. The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing the accounting cycle, streamlining systems and procedures, working with all areas/programs of the organization to ensure accuracy of financial results and adherence to internal controls, and financial reporting and analysis. The Senior Accountant is expected to assist the Controller-Tribal Government and the Tribe’s Chief Financial Officer with preparation and maintenance of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. This job description is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities of this position. The Senior Accountant is expected to perform all duties and responsivities necessary to meet the goals and objectives of applicable programs.

The Senior Accountant is expected to live the purpose and values of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and will go beyond the call of duty.

Primary Responsibilities Of The Senior Accountant

  • Prepares and assists in reviewing and approving adjusting journal entries to accurately close the monthly fiscal period in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Assists Controller-Tribal Government in achieving short- and long-term Departmental goals and objectives
  • Assists Controller-Tribal Government in development and implementation of accounting and administrative policies and procedures to improve productivity, accuracy and timeliness of financial reports and information
  • Prepares and assists in reviewing and approving various reconciliations of accounts and journal entries related to such accounts
  • Performs and documents analysis of accounting transactions, including comparisons to forecasted and trended results. Should question/validate data provided, gather additional information, request clarification/backup documentation, correct inaccuracies and/or to address other needs/issues prior (or subsequent) to the initiation of processing activities
  • Leads all project management that impacts any Tribal accounting systems
  • Maintains all fixed assets including management of tribal Auctions
  • Leads in the coordination of the month end closings, quarterly reviews, and year-end audits
  • Assists in the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements with footnotes
  • Maintains positive internal customer relationships by providing prompt and appropriate responses to inquiries, issues, and concerns when appropriate
  • Maintains audit schedules and requests status during quarterly reviews and year-end audits
  • Performs supervisory responsibilities such as planning, assigning, reviewing, and directing work, coaching, and appraising performance of direct reports
  • Mentors and trains subordinate staff accountants, bookkeepers and/or clerk
  • Maintains high level confidentiality of data
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Education/License/Certification and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred
  • Six (6) years of employment experience including reconciliation/analysis and interaction with business unit management experience required
  • Experience in a governmental accounting is preferred
  • Six (6) years of experience in Financial Accounting month-end/year-end close process required
  • Two (2) years of fixed asset accounting experience required
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience with accounting software is required
  • Implementation of ERP or accounting software preferred

Skills Required

  • Must have knowledge of 1099 and tax reporting
  • Absolute confidentiality
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations applicable to Federal grants, contracts, programs, and funding sources preferred
  • Knowledge and practice of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) required
  • Strong knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles
  • Strong knowledge of automated accounting and financial reporting systems
  • Strategic visionary with sound technical skills, analytical ability, strong operational focus and a creative thinker
  • Strong organizational and follow up skills including the ability to handle competing priorities and meet all deadlines and commitments
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time and view information displayed on a computer screen
  • Must be proficient and accurate in operating a 10-Key calculator and in accurately and efficiently typing on a computer keyboard
  • Must be able to get along well with all levels of the organization and excel in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to identify sensitive issues and facilitate communications in a proactive manner to avoid surprises. Ability to understand and navigate through a complex governmental accounting system

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work odd and irregular hours, as needed
  • Must successfully pass the required criminal and character background check
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and an insurable driving record according to Tribal Insurance Guidelines
  • Ability to travel and participate in required training, leadership development and other events
  • Ability to adequately and successfully perform all duties and responsibilities of this position
